Max Verstappen shocked the Formula 1 paddock at the Azerbaijan GP. After a historic win at Monza in the last round, the Red Bull star continued his dominance to emerge victorious in the streets of Baku. This has reignited the Orange Army’s hopes of Verstappen potentially winning the championship. However, the 27-year-old has now downplayed his prospects.
The reigning world champion had written off his chances of winning a fifth consecutive title earlier this year. Though the last two races have put Max Verstappen back in the fight. After the Baku win, Verstappen trails behind championship leader Oscar Piastri by just 69 points. With 7 races to go, the 27-year-old may have a realistic shot at the championship.
Max Verstappen was asked if he had any hope of defending the title after the two victories. The Dutchman made it clear that he doesn’t depend on hope when it comes to winning. Verstappen admitted that the gap was still significant considering the number of remaining races. Thus, the Red Bull star was not going to look at the bigger picture for now, and instead will go on a race-by-race basis. So much so, he asserted that fans will only find out the reality after the Abu Dhabi season finale.
I don’t rely on hope. But its 7 rounds left, 69 points is a lot. I personally don’t think about it. I go race by race, as I have been doing the entire season. After Abu Dhabi we’ll know.

So far, Max Verstappen has shown dominant pace at Monza and Baku. Both tracks have long straights, seemingly giving an advantage to Red Bull compared to rivals such as McLaren. However, the two races do not give a complete picture for the remainder of the season. Thus, Red Bull Motorsport Consultant Dr. Helmut Marko has insisted that the team was going to wait a bit more before dreaming of a fifth championship for Verstappen.
Marko was asked about Max Verstappen’s prospects to win the title after the Azerbaijan victory. The 82-year-old asserted that the upcoming Singapore GP will set the benchmark for the remainder of the season. If Verstappen manages a good performance at Marina Bay, Helmut Marko claimed that Red Bull could start ‘dreaming.’
Singapore will be the benchmark. If we’re competitive there — then we can start dreaming.

The Singapore GP is a tight circuit with some challenging corners. This could give a better picture of where Max Verstappen and Red Bull will stand in the last seven races. Despite winning the last two rounds, Verstappen understands that things will not be easy. The 27-year-old will have to carry this momentum at each race to win a fifth title in a row and make history.
