One of the biggest stories swirling around the paddock ahead of the British Grand Prix this weekend wasn’t even about who would take the win. It was all about what’s happening off the track.
Rumors are picking up steam that Max Verstappen could be eyeing a shocking move to Mercedes, even though both he and Red Bull have tried to shut it down.
But you know how Formula 1 gossip goes. Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire. And Verstappen didn’t exactly calm things down, either. His pointed comments during the race about the team’s car development have only added fuel to the fire.
In the middle of a wild race filled with safety cars, crashes and spin-outs, Verstappen didn’t hold back on the team radio. He jumped on the mic to share exactly what he thought about the RB21 and let’s just say he wasn’t sugarcoating anything. Verstappen said, “This car is just undriveable. [Expletive]."
The British Grand Prix weekend was a real roller coaster for Verstappen and Red Bull. Friday’s free practice was rough. Clips were all over the place of Verstappen wrestling with the RB21 just to keep it on the track through corners, and plenty of pundits pointed out how tricky the car looked to drive.
But in true Verstappen fashion, he pulled something special out of the bag and grabbed an unexpected pole on Saturday, even with Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton all looking strong. Come race day, though, things fell apart. Verstappen got jumped by Piastri a few laps into the race, lost spots to Norris and even spun, which you hardly ever see from him. He ended up finishing fifth after starting first, which is a tough pill to swallow.
He’s now 69 points behind Piastri in the standings, and with Red Bull struggling to catch up to McLaren’s pace, you have to wonder could this be the moment that pushes Verstappen to seriously look elsewhere? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
