Amidst the falter of Red Bulls 2026 season, there have been rumours around whether or not Verstappen will be staying in Formula 1. Many have assumed that after this season Max will retire because of the new regulations, others say that he will retire because he is not in a winning car anymore. But we will never know everything that is going through Verstappen’s head right now.
Since there are no races for four-weeks, Max Verstappen will be taking the time to seriously consider his future in Formula 1after having expressed that he would rather be in places that make him happier than he feels in the sport currently. He recently said “every day I wake up, I convince myself again [to continue racing]. And I try'”.
Verstappen has recently said that he would like to spend more time focusing on his family. The four-time World champion stated that he “would not like to spend his whole life racing” and “family is the most important thing.” Aligning with recently having a daughter in May of last year, with partner, Kelly Piquet, which heavily impacts his decision on retirement or not.
The driver also mentioned spending more time with his friends and doing more that makes him happier, rather than continuing to spend time being unhappy in his sport.
Max Verstappen has an exit clause that was specifically tailored to the 2026 regulations. Various reports say that he could activate the exit clause if he is not first or second in the competition order by midseason. From the performance we have seen from Red Bull so far this year – Verstappen reaching those positions is unlikely.
There is an assumption that MV3 will take more of a sabbatical from the sport, rather than retiring. Either way, he will be taking a large chunk of money with him. During his BBC interview on March 29, Verstappen addressed this “as a kid, this is what i wanted to do, and back then I had no idea what i could achieve or how much money you make.” continuing with “You never think of that as a kid, and its not about that. I want to be here to have fun and have a great time and enjoy myself. At the moment, that’s not really the case.”
Only time will tell what Verstappen’s decision will be. We will just have to wait to see if he thinks staying will be worth it or not. But what we do know is that there are many factors contributing to his decision.
