Formula 1 legend Mario Andretti has caused a renewed controversy in the paddock by making public remarks that the McLaren team is showing favoritism to Lando Norris against teammate Oscar Piastri. The remarks have sparked controversy among insiders and fans of F1, as questions have been raised on the internal driver relationship and long-term plans of McLaren as the championship battle tightens.
Recently, the 1978 Formula 1 World Champion expressed his fears over what he believes to be an unbalanced team approach at McLaren. “As far as I can see, McLaren seems to be supportive of Norris. Piastri is not doing anything wrong, but he does not necessarily appear to get the same treatment, Andretti said. You can observe it in the strategy meetings and radio choices on the race.” Andretti pointed out he was not accusing McLaren of any ill intent, but just in subtle patterns of decision-making that favor their existing star.
Since the beginning of the 2019 season, Norris has been at the core of the F1 program at McLaren. He has forged strong bonds within the team, is a marketing face behind McLaren, and has come out strong in the grid as a driver. Piastri, though, has been able to show at a rapid rate that he is not just a supporting act. With only two seasons in Formula 1, the Australian has been cool, accurate, and blisteringly quick, often matching or even out-pacing Norris on pure pace.
However, there were a few cases this season that were the cause of the claims of Andretti:
The assertions of Andretti were strongly denied by the McLaren Team Principal, Andrea Stella. “We make no distinction between drivers. The decision in the strategy is made in real time and race situation rather than favoritism, Stella said. Both Lando and Oscar are armed to the task. We have to provide the best car and the best opportunities to them.”
Upon being questioned about the comments made by Andretti, Oscar Piastri did not make a dramatic comment and instead just came out to defend his association with the team.
“I like the assistance of a person like Mario, and within the team, everything is okay. We both get fair treatment. Of course, you do not always have it your way with certain decisions, but that is racing,” Piastri said.
His restrained voice hardly held back a trace of rivalry. Piastri is a respectful driver, but one who has definite ambitions, and he did not specifically refute the feeling that he felt disadvantaged at times.
Andretti struck a nerve, according to some F1 analysts. The emotional focus of McLaren is Norris, who is popular, outspoken, and thoroughly ingrained in the culture of the team. Piastri, however, is a quiet and analytical guy whose strength in doing so earned him respect, but not the same fame in the media and within the organization itself. Norris has his strongest voice within the team at the moment. He’s earned it. That is no reason to lock Piastri in a box, though, said one of the insiders of the paddocks.
The driver line-up of McLaren is one of the toughest in Formula 1. However, dangerous in-house competition would either lift a group or splinter a group. Whenever Piastri starts feeling underrated, speculation that he will link with Ferrari in the future or even Red Bull will spread
The remarks made by Andretti did not merely raise a question of a strategy, but they highlighted a sensitive case that McLaren has to handle. Transparency and fairness will be necessary in case the team is interested in retaining both drivers in the long run.
