Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli's ability to adapt could help him take a step forward in 2026

Formula 1 will look a lot different in 2026, with new rule changes, changes to the cars and the addition of a new track (Madrid, Spain).

The usual suspects (McLaren, Red Bull Racing, Mercedes and Ferrari) will be competing for the Constructors’ Championship, but other teams could be potential underdogs due to the rule changes. With things being so unknown heading into next season, a driver like Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who had an impressive rookie season, could find himself at the top of the grid after showcasing his skills.

Kimi Antonelli could be someone to continue to watch in 2026 as he adjusts to life as a Formula 1 driver

Antonelli won't turn 20 until Aug. 25, so he still has some growing to do. But he may advance faster than people think. Antonelli was the seventh-best driver on the grid in 2025, which was three places higher than two-time Drivers’ Champion Fernando Alonso (10th) and right behind seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton (sixth).

Antonelli finished the season with 150 points, earning 14 top 10 finishes and seven top five finishes.

With George Russell (fourth, 319 points) as his teammate, Mercedes has one of the better driver lineups on the grid, which could result in it leapfrogging McLaren for the Constructors’ title. Teams are continuing to test their cars and adjust to the changes. Antonelli adapted well to a whole new style of racing in 2025, which is what he’ll have to do again going into the new season.
