Oscar Piastri poised to break historic F1 record in final stretch

Oscar Piastri’s steady rise in Formula 1 has been defined not only by speed but also by remarkable consistency.

Following the Italian Grand Prix, which took place Sept. 7 at Monza, the McLaren driver extended his run of consecutive race finishes to 44, moving into second place on the all-time list and closing in on a historic record.

The benchmark is held by Lewis Hamilton, who completed 48 successive finishes between 2018 and 2020. Piastri’s streak, which began after his retirement at the 2023 United States Grand Prix during his rookie season, is now just four races shy of equalling that tally.

In the process, he has already moved past Max Verstappen’s run of 43 consecutive finishes achieved between 2022 and 2024.

Oscar Piastri has shown impressive consistency with finishing streak

Consistency at this level is a rare commodity in modern Formula 1, where mechanical failures, accidents and unpredictable conditions often end streaks long before they reach such numbers.

This point was highlighted at the Dutch Grand Prix, when Lando Norris retired with an engine failure while leading, handing victory and a major swing in the championship fight to Piastri.

The Australian’s ability to avoid trouble highlights both his measured driving style and the reliability McLaren has built into its car over the past two seasons. Now in only his third year at the top level, the streak also speaks to Piastri’s maturity while maintaining raw pace.

The timing adds further weight, as Piastri is a central figure in this season’s title battle, leading teammate Norris by 31 points in the drivers’ standings. Every completed race maximizes his points haul and keeps him on course to surpass Hamilton’s record if his run continues.

Durability has long been a hallmark of the sport’s great champions. Hamilton’s dominance across the hybrid era was founded not only on speed but on his relentless ability to bring the car home.

Piastri’s current run, combined with his growing championship credentials, now puts him in that same conversation, raising expectations about what the 24-year-old might achieve over the next decade.

With four races separating him from matching Hamilton and five from holding the record outright, the final stretch of the season could see Piastri write another chapter of Formula 1 history. For McLaren, it is further proof that its rising star is not only fast, but built to last.
