Oscar Piastri’s rapid rise in F1 shows no signs of slowing

In just his third full season in Formula 1, Oscar Piastri has quickly become one of the sport’s most promising young talents. His rise in 2025 has been meteoric, with the Australian driver firmly positioning himself as a serious championship contender.

Since joining McLaren in 2023, Piastri has displayed remarkable consistency, finishing on the podium in all but one race this season.

With 99 points, he leads the Drivers’ Championship, ahead of teammate Lando Norris (89) and reigning world champion Max Verstappen (87). Piastri has held the top spot since securing his third victory of the season at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where he controversially passed Verstappen on the opening corner.

"It was a pretty tough race. Very, very happy to have won," Piastri said after the race. "Made the difference at the start, made my case into Turn 1, and that was enough.

"We did the parts we needed to right. Still need a bit more, I think. Max was a little bit too close for our liking, but a great race and a great weekend."

The 24-year-old's win in Jeddah added to his earlier victories in Bahrain and China. His success has been aided by his ability to quickly adapt to McLaren’s MCL39 chassis — a feat that has proved more challenging for Norris, his more experienced teammate.

A key factor in Piastri’s success is his exceptional ability to maximize the potential of his car. While McLaren has made significant strides in 2024 and 2025, the team’s progress has been propelled by both the rapid development of its car and Piastri's ability to extract its strengths.

Unlike many young drivers, who take time to adjust, Piastri has hit the ground running, showcasing maturity beyond his years. His technical understanding, coupled with flawless race management, has allowed him to remain competitive at every grand prix.

Piastri’s rise also signals a new era in Formula 1. His standout performances place him among a fresh generation of drivers challenging the established order, with the 2025 grid featuring several talented rookies. His success is especially notable as the first time since 2010 an Australian driver has led the championship, a sign of fresh energy in the sport.

With the 2025 season still young, Piastri’s ascent shows no signs of slowing. His contract extension with McLaren, which runs through 2028, secures his future with the team and in Formula 1. If his early performances are any indication, this could be just the beginning of what promises to be a remarkable career.
