Son of $600 million ex-F1 champion not on the list of any team for a 2025 comeback

Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher was reckoned to be a future F1 champion. The young German driver won the Formula 2 championship in 2020. However, all went downhill after he joined the Haas F1 team the following year. The 24-year-old was ousted from the sport at the end of 2022 and spent a year on the sidelines. Now, it seems that Schumacher might not return to the grid in the foreseeable future.

The German driver took up a reserve role at Mercedes last season which continues this year as well. Moreover, Mick Schumacher joined Alpine’s Hypercar program in WEC for 2024. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old has made it clear that he eyes an F1 return potentially even replacing Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton at Brackley.

Unfortunately, as per reports, Mick Schumacher is not on the list for any F1 team for 2025 including his employers, Mercedes and Alpine. The 24-year-old will be doing simulator work for the Silver Arrows with a specific clause to prioritize his F1 duties over Alpine’s WEC program. Schumacher has mentioned that his main aim remains to re-enter Formula 1 as a full-time driver. However, for now, the German might not have any available options.

Could Mercedes open a door for Mick Schumacher?

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has praised Schumacher on multiple occasions. The Austrian billionaire reportedly tried to get Williams’ James Vowles to replace Logan Sargeant with Mick Schumacher for 2024. However, Vowles decided to reaffirm his faith in the American driver who was part of the Grove-based team’s driver academy.

Lewis Hamilton’s shock switch to Ferrari has left Mercedes without a driver for 2025. The Silver Arrows would need to find a replacement for the F1 icon. However, it seems that Schumacher will not be in the running for this seat. Although, Wolff could find a place for the German at Williams if the Brackley-based team signs Alex Albon for next season.

Certainly, it would be interesting to see if Mick Schumacher could find a seat in F1 for 2025. The German driver presently is fully focused on his Hypercar campaign with Alpine. However, the 24-year-old would be willing to make an F1 comeback if the opportunity arises in the coming months.
