Valtteri Bottas will head into the 2026 Formula 1 season already under scrutiny after an unresolved penalty from the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was officially carried over, meaning the Cadillac driver will still be serving punishment when racing resumes in Australia.

According to the FIA’s final race stewards’ document from the 2024 Abu Dhabi GP, Bottas was found at fault for causing a collision with Kevin Magnussen at Turn 6 during the race.

The stewards concluded that Bottas, driving Car 77, misjudged his braking while on the inside of Magnussen’s Haas and made contact as the Danish driver was turning in on the racing line.

The incident resulted in Bottas retiring from the race, but that did not prevent the FIA from issuing a penalty. Under the regulations, a driver who retires can still be sanctioned, and the stewards deemed the severity of the error equivalent to a drive-through penalty.

As a result, Bottas was handed a five-place grid penalty for the next race he competes in, along with three penalty points on his FIA Super Licence. Those three points brought his rolling 12-month total to five, which placed him closer to the threshold that risked a race ban if he had raced during the 2025 F1 season.

What It Means for Valtteri Bottas and Cadillac F1

The grid penalty could not be served at the time because Abu Dhabi was the final race of the 2024 season. That means it automatically carries forward to the opening round of the next championship, the 2026 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The FIA’s ruling also confirmed that the collision was caused by a “significant misjudgement” from Bottas, based on video footage and in-car data reviewed by the stewards. The verdict makes clear that the sanction was not symbolic, but rather a direct sporting penalty meant to be applied at the next available opportunity.

For Bottas and Cadillac, that means the 2026 season will begin with an immediate setback, with the Finn forced to drop five positions on the grid regardless of how well he qualifies in Australia, a frustrating legacy from a moment that ended his 2024 run on a sour note.
