Ferrari are running out of time to justify spending more resources on their 2025 package. With the Scuderia almost 200 points behind McLaren, their chances of winning the constructors title are extremely low.
It would take a near-miraculous set of upgrades for Ferrari to compete for this year’s title.
Even if the SF-25 is a few tenths faster, this would be insufficient to overturn McLaren’s massive points cushion.
The Maranello team need huge improvement to have any chance of giving Andrea Stella’s squad headaches.
With this in mind, Ferrari will bring a series of changes to the SF-25 before the summer break.
For the first time since joining the team in 2023, Fred Vasseur has been under significant pressure.
The Ferrari team principal’s future is increasingly in doubt, with several reports from Italy suggesting the Scuderia’s ownership are unsatisfied with results.
When asked about this speculation in Canada, Vasseur dismissed the claims.
He emphasised his positive relationship with Hamilton and Leclerc and the team as a whole:
“We have a clear target. We know that we have to work. We know that we have to push.
“But the mood in the team is very good, and that’s the basis if you want to recover and to win.
“Everything is there. Everything is on the table to do a good job, and altogether, we are working well.”
Whether it would be correct to replace Vasseur at the end of 2025 is a debate in itself.
Considering Ferrari’s failure to win a title since 2008, putting the blame solely on Vasseur seems a misallocation of blame.
The team’s fortunes have undoubtedly improved from when the 57-year-old joined two years ago.
Regardless, what will ultimately dictate the Ferrari team principal’s future is the perception of the Scuderia’s senior leadership.
In this context, the next few months will be critical to secure the Frenchman’s position at the team.
This does not necessarily mean Vasseur would be kicked out mid-season, or even at the end of 2025.
Changing team principals before a new set of regulations would be very counter-intuitive.
Still, for a variety of reasons, Ferrari are in desperate need of results.
With Vasseur’s future in doubt, both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have stated their unequivocal support for their leader.
Given Hamilton’s long-standing relationship with the 57-year-old, this is hardly a surprise.
The same can be said for Leclerc, who made his F1 debut in 2018 at Sauber when Vasseur was team principal at Hinwil.
Of course, this does not mean either driver is satisfied with the team’s current performance.
Having finished last year in strong form, narrowly missing out on the constructors title, Ferrari were expected to be challengers in 2025.
This could not be any further from the truth. George Russell’s victory in Canada means Ferrari are the only top team without a race win this year.
Leclerc, who has been at the team for the better part of a decade, another season without title-contending machinery will be immensely disappointing.
It will also raise the stakes for how the team perform in the 2026 regulations.
Hamilton, who is in the final chapter of his career, cannot afford to spend several years waiting for the Scuderia to find their feet.
On all fronts, therefore, Ferrari are under pressure to turn things around.
