Not all surf contests are built the same, and the Single Fin Hoedown, began as a celebration of roots Florida surf culture, and since its revival a few years ago has grown into a beloved community tradition. Started in 2003 by Enrique “Moose” Huerta and the crew at St. Augustine’s beloved Surf Station, surfers in the Single Fin Hoedown use vintage or retro-style single-fins, paying tribute to the era when surfing was more soulful and expressive than competitive in spirit, attracting both veteran pros, underground stylists, and young talents eager to try their hand at traditional surf craft.
The judging is relaxed, with an emphasis on flow, creativity, and style rather than high-performance maneuvers. Last weekend was no different and all surfers brought their best and took their shot at getting some of the "dark money" from Dark Seas after every heat. Surfers had a chance at $50 for best style, best costume, best ride, best wipeout, best shared wave, and more. This brought an attitude of creativity and spontaneity and kept things rad and oh so weird throughout every heat.
In the end , only three overall winners could be named and Kylie Pulcini won the women’s division with Rasta Rob taking the men's final, but an honorable mention goes to Sebastian Peters as overall consensus was that he was the standout throughout the day. Ko Minks won the Dark Seas grom expression session, and earned an invite to the men's division next year.
Regardless of who wins, the Hoedown holds a special place for all competitors and is a great reminder of what surfing is all about, having fun, catching waves, and not taking things too seriously. It has taken on a new life since being revived by local pillar Chris Ropero in 2023.
Photographer Brandon "Laserwolf" Campbell says, "While so many coastal communities have been overran with high salary transplants causing the locals to be priced out of paradise, St. Augustine has been able to keep the rootsy surf community feel alive and well."
The Hoedown always brings together live music, local food vendors, and a beach party atmosphere that’s made it a staple of the St. Augustine surf calendar, and the area's tight-knit surf culture, bringing people together year after year.
In a world of fast-paced, high-tech competitions, the Single Fin Hoedown offers a refreshing reminder of the sport's humble, soulful origins, and a terrific example of the incredible surf community in St. Augustine. We'll see you there next year!

GAINESVILLE, Fla.-- Florida Gators baseball's interim head coach, Chuck Jeroloman, is reportedly leaving the program for a job with one of the team's top rivals. Jeroloman, who was recently announced as the interim head coach while head coach Kevin O'Sullivan takes a leave of absence, is joining Tennessee head coach Josh Elander's first staff as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator, according to multiple reports. Jeroloman first joined Florida ahead of the 2020 season and was entering his seventh season as the associate head coach. His move to Tennessee marks his second stint with Elander, who replaced Tony Vitello after his move to the San Francisco Giants, as the two previously crossed paths at TCU in 2012. Jeroloman was a volunteer assistant, while Elander was in his junior year with the Horned Frogs. Jeroloman was a key recruiter for the Gators while a major developer for the team's hitters and infielders, including, most-recently, rising sophomore infielder Brendan Lawson (.317 with 10 home runs and 61 RBIs) and former players such as Bobby Boser - who led the 2025 Gators with 80 hits, 18 home runs and 67 RBIs - and MLB stars Jac Cagilanone and Wyatt Langford. Florida's current baseball coaching staff consists of assistant coach Taylor Black, pitching coach David Kopp, student assistant Michael Byrne, director of player development Mike Rivera, strength and conditioning coordinator Shawn Burke and director of baseball operations Buddy Munroe. Black is entering his fifth season with the program, while Kopp is entering his third year as the pitching coach after joining the program as a volunteer assistant in 2021. Florida has not announced the new interim while O'Sullivan continues to take time away from the program. O'Sullivan, entering his 19th season as the Gators' head coach, announced on Oct. 22 he was temporarily stepping away from the program for an undisclosed amount of time to address personal matters. "I appreciate the support of the University and athletic department," O'Sullivan said. "I have some personal and family issues that need my full attention at this time." The Gators travel to Jacksonville on Friday to play Jacksonville University in the first of two fall exhibitions, starting at 6:30 p.m. Florida hosts Georgia Southern on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. to round out the fall exhibition slate. The regular season begins on Feb. 13 with a three-game series against UAB, during which O'Sullivan will be suspended as a result of multiple incidents during last year's Conway Regional.
LeBron James may be out due to sciatica, but Charles Barkley is not buying it. He thinks he knows what is really going on with the Los Angeles Lakers star. Barkley was goofing around during “Inside the NBA” on ESPN Wednesday and talked about the Lakers, who had several players out for their game at the Minnesota Timberwolves. James was listed as out due to sciatica, which is a nerve issue. Barkley thinks the sciatica injury is a cover for something else. “First of all, LeBron doesn’t have a sciatica. They just put ‘old.’ O-L-D, with an extra ‘D,’ too,” Barkley joked. An update on James’ condition came out this week, saying that the Lakers forward could return in a few weeks. The Lakers have seemed to suggest that there is no urgency to rush James into action. However, Luka Doncic also getting hurt recently may have changed things for the team. For now, the Lakers are 3-2 and have been relying on Austin Reaves to do plenty of scoring. He is averaging 34.2 points per game this season. James is 40 years old and entering his 23rd NBA season. He’s allowed to have “old” or sciatica as an injury issue. As Barkley knows and often says, Father Time is undefeated.
The NHL season is just about a month in, with nearly every team having played 10 games so far. While several teams, such as the Pittsburgh Penguins, Seattle Kraken and Detroit Red Wings, have exceeded expectations, many have fallen short. A disappointing start means many coaches will face the ire of fans who call for their dismissal, fair or not. Which bench bosses are actually in danger of a mid-season firing? Let's take a look at three NHL coaches on the hot seat. Andrew Brunette, Nashville Predators After a brief stint as the Florida Panthers' interim head coach in 2021-22, Brunette was hired by the Predators in May 2023. So far, his results have been less than stellar. After a first round exit in 2024, the Predators ramped up that offseason, adding big names such as Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei. Brunette was unable to translate this into success, as the Predators finished with just 30 wins and the third worst record in the NHL. This season, Nashville's struggles have continued, with a 4-5-2 record, good for 26th overall. Stamkos has just one goal and two points through 11 games and goaltender Juuse Saros sports a .905 save percentage, far below his career average of .914. With a 30th-ranked goals for per game (2.45) and power play (11.8%), if the Predators don't turn things around, Brunette could be the first head coach let go. Lindy Ruff, Buffalo Sabres The Sabres currently have the NHL's longest postseason drought at 14 seasons and have hopes of turning around their fortunes for the 2025-26 season. Ruff, who coached the Sabres from 1997-2013, returned to Buffalo for the 2024-25 season, which the Sabres ended in 26th place. After a rough 0-4-1 start, the Sabres bounced back, going 4-1-2 in their next seven games. However, as of Thursday, Buffalo is still out of a playoff spot as the Thanksgiving benchmark looms. The Sabres will need to improve their 12th-worst 3.10 goals against average, which should be helped as starting goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has returned from injury. While Ruff may have a little bit off leeway, come mid-season, if Buffalo doesn't project to play meaningful games in March and April, the Sabres may move on from the long-time NHL coach. John Hynes, Minnesota Wild Hynes' first two seasons in Minnesota have yielded subpar results: a sixth-place finish in 2023-24 and first round loss to Vegas in 2024-25. Although the Wild have made the playoffs eight of the past 10 seasons, they've yet to make it past the first round in any of those years. With superstar Kirill Kaprizov committing to Minnesota with a record breaking eight-year, $136 million contract, the Wild and Hynes desperately need to capitalize on the winger's prime years. A 3-5-3 start sees Minnesota in seventh place in the Central Division. They've struggled to keep the puck out of their net (fourth worst GAA in the league) and score at 5v5 (15 5v5 goals, worst in the league), leaving Hynes with some work to do. If Hynes can't turn things around in the State of Hockey, a mid-season firing may need to happen to jump start the team.
With the NFL Trade Deadline rapidly approaching, the Philadelphia Eagles have been actively looking to upgrade their roster. One of the main positions of focus has been improving the pass rush. The Eagles look prepared to take a big swing to address this, in the form of a Myles Garrett trade. Myles Garrett Trade Rumors Swirling With the Eagles in the Crosshairs Eagle Eye Myles Garrett has started to come up in trade rumors over the last few weeks. The Cleveland Browns’ loss against the New England Patriots was a perfect example of why. Garrett had an unbelievable game, recording five sacks. The Browns ultimately lost the game by 19 points. This was the first time in NFL history a player recorded five sacks while losing by more than three points. Garrett has clearly become increasingly frustrated with his team’s struggles despite his own individual performance. Garrett also seems distanced from the team amid his frustration. Amid this uncertainty, rumors have circulated about the Eagles’ willingness to make a trade for the future Hall of Famer. Yahoo Sports reporter Charles Robinson added fuel to the fire with recent comments. Robinson said, “Howie Roseman and the Eagles are super hot after Myles Garrett and would give up like three first-round picks for him.” This would be an unprecedented move from Howie Roseman and the Eagles. On one hand, they would be adding one of the best defensive players in football. Pairing him with Jalen Carter on the defensive line would be a nightmare for opposing offenses. This would be an all-in move for a team recognizing they are in a championship window, trying to maximize it. The Eagles would almost assuredly become the favorites to win the NFC, at the very least. Adding one of, if not the best, pass rushers in the NFL would leave them with almost no weaknesses and a great chance to repeat as champions. Paying a Hefty Price This acquisition would not be cheap for the Eagles. Although Garrett is an all-time great player, giving up three first-round picks would leave the Eagles without a first-round draft pick all the way until 2029. Given all of the massive contracts the Eagles already have (including Garrett in this scenario), it would make it an almost impossible financial situation to navigate. Roseman has shown an ability to navigate tough financial situations, though. He has also shown an ability to maximize his later-round draft picks. In just the last three drafts, the Eagles have drafted all of these players outside of the first round: Cooper DeJean, Jalyx Hunt, Andrew Mukuba, Tyler Steen, Tanner McKee, and Moro Ojomo, among others. It is unlikely the Browns will end up trading Myles Garrett. If they do, though, it is a no-brainer move for the Eagles, regardless of the hefty price they would have to pay. Other Eagles Trade Speculation The Eagles already made a trade this week to reinforce their secondary. Trading with the New York Jets, they acquired cornerback Michael Carter in return for wide receiver John Metchie and a late-round pick swap. Carter has been a solid slot cornerback for the Jets across his five seasons in the NFL. This move gives the Eagles more versatility defensively, allowing them to move DeJean to the outside cornerback position if they choose to. NFL Insider Jordan Schultz also fueled speculation with his latest report on the Philadelphia Eagles. He reported they “are in on everything”. This certainly lines up with Roseman’s aggressive nature and suggests the Eagles could have an unexpected move up their sleeve. Regardless of what that looks like, the clock is ticking ahead of the NFL’s November 4th trade deadline.
