2025 Injury Report: Updates on Montas, Semien, Wheeler

Philadelphia won’t have their ace for the rest of 2025, as Zack Wheeler underwent season-ending surgery that could affect his 2026 season (and beyond). Additionally, Rangers iron man infielder Marcus Semien went on the IL for the first time since 2017.

Wheeler done for 2025

The Phillies officially ruled Zack Wheeler out for the rest of 2025 and beyond on August 23. Wheeler will undergo surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, just days after he had a procedure to address a blood clot.

This will end what was a strong 2025 season for Wheeler. However, now the question becomes what will Wheeler be when he returns. The estimated timeline of recovery is six to eight months, potentially impacting his 2026 season.

It should be noted that Wheeler was diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome, different than the neurogenic one that affected Matt Harvey and Stephen Strasburg.

Montas also out for rest of 2025

The Mets placed Frankie Montas on the 15-day IL with a right UCL injury, although the team didn’t give too many specifics on it.

Manager Carlos Mendoza, though, confirmed that the UCL injury is significant, ending his 2025 season.

Semien on IL

The Rangers placed second baseman Marcus Semien on the 10-day IL with a left foot contusion.

Semien fouled a ball of his foot earlier this week and missed the team’s game on August 22.

Texas did get Adolis Garcia back from the injured list.

Rehab assignments

Pirates outfielder Oneil Cruz went 1-4 with an RBI and run scored for Altoona (AA).

Other injury news

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (hamstring) did not play on August 23. He did, however, take batting practice and participated in running drills.

The Padres placed outfielder Jackson Merrill on the 10-day IL with a left ankle strain.

Kansas City placed Bailey Falter on the IL with a left bicep contusion.

Kirby Yates (Dodgers), Victor Robles (Mariners), and Matt Chapman (Giants) were activated off the injured list. Robles, suspended for 10 games thanks to a bat-throwing incident in Triple-A, can play for now as he waits for an appeal decision.
