3 Potential Trade Destinations for Celtics Guard Anfernee Simons

The Boston Celtics are exploring the trade market for guard Anfernee Simons, and a trio of teams have emerged as potential candidates for his services.

Simons has yet to play a regular season game with Boston, coming over in a trade earlier this offseason with the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for veteran Jrue Holiday.

Boston moved Holiday and center Kristaps Porzingis in separate deals this offseason, while also letting veteran Al Horford walk in free agency - all moves designed to help the team shed salary heading into a season where they are expected to be without superstar Jayson Tatum due to an ACL injury.

Simons, 26, spent the first seven seasons of his career in Portland. Last year the 6'3 guard averaged 19.3 points and 4.8 assists in 70 games, shooting 36.3% from three. His high level outside shooting and scoring could make him an appealing target for teams in need of a jolt on offense, either in the starting lineup or as a microwave scorer off the bench.

Here are three teams that make sense as trade partners for Simons:

1. Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia is desperately looking to bounce back after a lost year last year thanks to injuries to Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, and rookie guard Jared McCain.

McCain and Maxey are both excellent young guards, and the team also drafted VJ Edgecombe, but three point shooting remains an area of concern for the 76ers.

If Philadelphia can find a way to make the money work, Simons is a quality sixth man option who can play either on or off the ball and provide much needed floor spacing for Embiid to operate.

2. Denver Nuggets

Denver already made a big move this offseason, sending forward Michael Porter Jr out to Brooklyn in exchange for Cam Johnson, but the team remains in the mix for backcourt help behind starters Jamal Murray and Christian Braun.

While Julian Strawther and Bruce Brown are both quality depth options, neither have played a ton at point guard. Adding Simons gives the Nuggets a versatile guard who can really space the floor, and while he's limited defensively the offensive bag fits very nicely in Denver.

The main issue for the Nuggets is finding a way to accommodate Simons' $27.7M salary, but if the front office gets creative this would be a great move on paper.

3. Milwaukee Bucks

The last time Milwaukee made a big move for a Portland guard didn't work out so well, with Damian Lillard already back with the Blazers after his brief tenure with the Bucks didn't pan out.

Milwaukee is still pushing their chips in, acquiring Myles Turner to pair with Giannis Antetokounmpo in the frontcourt. Before the window closes the Bucks will need to find some help in the backcourt, and Simons is a logical addition to provide floor spacing and NBA experience alongside Giannis, Turner, and Kyle Kuzma.

Boston is not desperate to move Simons, indicating if they don't find a deal they will happily take him into the season. However, as training camp draws near and teams start to realize what they need to compete for a title in 2026, don't be surprised to see Simons' name continue to come up in trade talks.
