76ers Targeting Award Winner as New Favorite Over Ace Bailey in NBA Draft: Report

The Philadelphia 76ers are preparing to use their No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA draft. They've explored options on which prospect they'll select. The top favorite for the 76ers is Rutgers forward Ace Bailey. The 6-foot-8 forward is expected to be a star in the league.

However, the 76ers have reportedly shifted their interest to another young prospect. According to ESPN's Jonathan Givony, Philly's management has taken an interest in Baylor guard V.J. Edgecombe. The 6-foot-4 youngster had a private workout with the organization and left a strong impression. Edgecombe also had meetings with the front office and the ownership, which has helped increase his draft stock.

Givony reported that Edgecombe is "the leader in the clubhouse" and Bailey is gradually losing momentum.

Drafting Edgecombe isn't final for the 76ers since Bailey is scheduled for a workout at the end of the week. However, Givony has already given some thought about his potential fit alongside the stars.

"Surrounding the hyper-explosive Edgecombe with prolific 3-point shooters such as Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, Quentin Grimes and Paul George could add another dimension to the Sixers' offense, especially if the team buys into the development of his passing ability long term,"  Givony proposed.

According to the draft expert, there's a belief that Edgecombe won't be drafted outside of the top five. If the 76ers opt to go a different direction, Givony believes the Charlotte Hornets will use the No. 4 pick to draft the shooting guard.

With Baylor, Edgecombe played in 33 games and averaged 15 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Also, he plays outstanding defense. He averaged 2.1 steals in his lone college year.
