Picking the perfect March Madness bracket is an impossible task for a lot of people. The toughness of the challenge makes it more attractive for millions of people across the United States, but every year, many see their dreams crushed.
This year, the trend continued, but one person could do the impossible and nail the perfect bracket. Ironically, it would go to somebody who doesn’t watch the games on a daily basis.
Ahead of Friday’s Sweet 16 contests in the women’s bracket, one person remains undefeated.
Otto Schellhammer, a 14-year-old from Pittsburgh, has nailed all 48 picks in the women’s bracket ahead of Friday’s action. The Associated Press reported that he is the only one of more than 41 million people across seven major contests to do so.
“I know people say this a lot about March Madness,” Schellhammer told the AP, “but it was 100% luck. I know basically nothing about any type of basketball. I play with my friends, but I don’t really watch it.”
He said he watched a game for the first time on Monday, and his Virginia Cavaliers pick paid off.
“The first game I watched of March Madness was on Monday,” Schellhammer said. “I came home and I was like, ‘I’ll check and see how my women’s bracket is doing.’ Then I watched Virginia beat Iowa, and that was pretty cool. And then I watched Notre Dame.”
He is 15 picks away from a 63-0 record. Now he needs more luck than ever. The odds of hitting a perfect bracket are about one in approximately 9.22 quintillion.
