Free speech is a sensitive issue in the U.S. right now, and the situation of Jimmy Kimmel, who recently returned to the airwaves after a forced hiatus, is a case in point. But he’s not the only example that comes to mind: a journalist from The Athletic had his media pass cut off for questioning a Golden Knights player in connection with the Team Canada junior issue.
Following their acquittal, the NHL return of Carter Hart and Michael McLeod seems imminent.
I visited Carolina & Vegas – the two likeliest landing spots – to see how the teams are handling the possibility.
The two trips went… differently. My story:https://t.co/p6QnWBefHQ –Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) September 25, 2025
What we’re reading is that a reporter from The Athletic has been asking questions in Carolina and Vegas in connection with Team Canada junior players. The Hurricanes did the right thing by allowing their members to answer the questions. content-ads]However, on the Vegas side, it was a different story. Coach Bruce Cassidy wasn’t given the OK to talk about the one-on-one situation with the reporter, and prior to a press conference with the coach, the reporter in question from The Athletic was ejected from the club’s practice arena not only for media availability, but also for the evening’s game. Basically, the club didn’t like the fact that the reporter “imprisoned” Noah Hanifin in a corner in order to question him on the subject. It’s a serious situation. Freedom of expression is at stake here, and the questions were related to the subject. If the journalist had, for example, gone to Florida to ask a Russian player about a controversial law in Manitoba, that would have been one thing. But here, it was related to hockey.
