The Air Jordan 9 Gym Red is clean and classic, and the glossy patent is exactly what this silhouette needed — I'll say that much. The 9s have never been my favorite Jordan. I find them heavy, almost boot-like, and that's hard for me to get past. But every now and then, a color combo makes me look twice, and this is one of them. These would be a great gift for the hubby, but I'm looking at current resale prices — seven years later, still above retail.
The "White Gym Red" traces its roots to an unreleased 2013 sample — the first time Jordan Brand put red patent leather on the AJ9. Sneaker News noted the original concept had been circulating among collectors for years before it finally went public.
The Air Jordan 9 “White Gym Red” dropped Oct 5, 2019 — clean white base, bold red patent leather.

Underrated AJ9 or still not your thing?

At drop, opinions were split. On NikeTalk, some members called the patent "too much," saying Jordan Brand overdid it. Others were immediately in. That divide makes sense — the AJ9 has always been polarizing, and patent only amplifies that. Seven years later, though, the resale market has its own opinion.
On StockX, prices run from $234 to $707, depending on size, all above the $190 retail. Slept on pairs don't hold like that. For more AJ9 options, the Air Jordan 9 "Flint Grey" is a clean, low-key companion piece, and if you want red patent energy on a different silhouette, the Air Jordan 11 'Win Like 96' is the move.
Add it to the list. No regrets.
