Alyssa Thomas’ sixth triple-double seals Mercury sweep of Valkyries

The Mercury took an early 17-15 lead after an 11-0 run in the first quarter and didn’t look back. Phoenix extended its lead to 20 points at one point in the game. The star of the victory was Thomas, as she had her 21st career triple-double with 16 assists, 13 points and 12 rebounds.

“I probably can’t talk about it enough, because the national media doesn’t,” said Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts, according to the team’s post-game recording. “Just her greatness. I think we’re all seeing it every night… I’m glad that she took a chance on coming here to Phoenix and I’m really happy for her that she’s having such a great year.”

After another historic game under her resume, Thomas gave love to the X-Factor, who gave the All-Star MVP chants during the game.

“I think it’s the ultimate sign of respect from a fanbase,” Thomas said, according to the team’s post-game recording. “Not too many people can say that they’ve had a crowd cheering for them like that, but truly appreciate it. I know I got them supporting me 100 percent and I’m just super grateful for those moments.”

Rookie guard Monique Akoa Makani also had a great game, scoring 18 points and shooting 66.7% from the field and from beyond the arc. She has continued to be a spark on both sides of the ball for the team.

“I don’t really think about it,” she said about her confidence as a shooter, according to the team’s post-game notes. “I just take whatever the game gives to me because I’m ready and focused on the game. The baskets just go in and I’m happy for it.”

With the win, Phoenix is now 22-14 and is fourth in league standings.

The Phoenix Mercury will return to California to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
