Aminul Islam, a director from the Chattogram division, has been elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), following the abrupt removal of former president Faruque Ahmed by the country's sports ministry. The decision marks a dramatic shift in BCB’s leadership after months of internal tension.
Faruque Ahmed’s nine-month tenure came to an end on Thursday evening when the sports ministry withdrew his nomination as its representative on the BCB board of directors.
The move came after eight board directors submitted a no-confidence letter against him, accusing him of autocratic leadership, constitutional violations, and poor governance.
“In light of the no-confidence letter sent by eight BCB directors against Faruque Ahmed, and the report presented by the fact-finding committee about the BPL, his nomination as the representative of the National Sports Council has been cancelled,” the ministry said in a statement.
Faruque, who had been elected BCB president on August 21 last year, was one of two directors nominated by the sports ministry.
His leadership had come under fire for bypassing the board in key decisions — most notably the controversial dismissal of head coach Chandika Hathurusingha in October, allegedly without board approval, a violation of clause 14-B of the BCB constitution.
The directors also criticized Faruque’s handling of the 2024–25 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season, claiming that he approved franchises like Durbar Rajshahi and Chittagong Kings without sufficient vetting. “Capable professionals have been overlooked while loyalty and personal allegiance have been rewarded,” read the no-confidence letter. “He is neither working for the development of Bangladesh cricket nor respecting the spirit of democratic governance.”
The eight directors who signed the letter were: Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, Mahbubul Anam, Kazi Inam Ahmed, Fahim Sinha, Salahuddin Chowdhury, Iftikhar Rahman, Saifur Alam Swapan Chowdhury, and Manjur Alam. Only Akram Khan and Faruque himself did not sign.
Although the BCB constitution does not allow for a formal no-confidence vote, the ministry acted on the letter in conjunction with its own findings.
Faruque, for his part, rejected the allegations and indicated he may pursue legal action. “There is no mention of a no-confidence motion in the BCB constitution, so I don't think it matters,” he told the Bengali daily Kaler Kantho. “I laughed out loud seeing the letter.”
With Faruque’s removal official, the BCB held a special meeting to elect a new president. Aminul Islam, who represents the Chattogram Division, emerged as the unanimous choice. He will now lead the board during a critical period, with domestic cricket reform and preparations for upcoming international tours on the agenda.
Islam’s election has been met with cautious optimism among board insiders, who hope for greater transparency, unity, and strategic direction under his leadership.
