Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has made it clear for a while that he would like to end his NBA career by playing with his son Bronny.
As time passes and LeBron continues to play at an extremely high level, that lofty goal of his is starting to become a reality.
Bronny is currently playing at USC as a freshman. Although he hasn’t exactly looked like a one-and-done type of prospect, it’s no secret that he dealt with a heart issue over the summer and is still in the process of working his way all the way back. And with the G League and two-way contracts now prominent in the NBA, he and the James family may decide that one year at USC is enough and he would like to pursue a career in the NBA.
According to a recent mock draft on ESPN by Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo though, Bronny is not projected to get drafted this year:
A month into his college career, James is still finding his footing at USC, having some strong offensive performances (15 points in 20 minutes at Oregon State) and some lackluster ones (two points vs. Stanford, zero points vs. Washington State), as he is not the type of player who will consistently carry a team with his scoring. He’s been excellent defensively, though, locking up in one-on-ones with his quick feet and strong frame, and flying around off the ball generating turnovers in bunches. Mostly a spot-up shooter and transition finisher, James has plenty of room to grow as a ball handler to become more of a true combo guard than an undersized 3-and-D wing like he currently appears. Finding another notch with his aggressiveness and scoring proficiency would make James a more clear-cut candidate for this year’s draft, and it’s not clear what his outlook will be if he doesn’t break out in the coming months. — Givony
If Bronny does indeed declare for the draft and doesn’t get picked, that could have some serious implications on LeBron and his future with the Lakers.
James has a player option with the Lakers for next season at around $50 million. He could either opt in to that and remain with the team for another year, or he can decline and test free agency, perhaps going to whatever team drafts Bronny.
The Lakers currently only the Clippers’ second round pick in 2024, which is projected to land at the end of the draft. Perhaps they use that pick on Bronny as a way of getting LeBron to stay in L.A.
If not and Bronny goes undrafted though, then he is free to sign with any team of his choosing as a free agent. That would give the Lakers another opportunity to bring in the eldest James son in hopes of getting his dad to play a seventh season with the team.
The bottom line is that if Bronny does indeed go undrafted, then that makes the pathway for LeBron playing with him a lot easier, whether that be them both signing elsewhere or them both staying with the Lakers.
As the college and NBA seasons continue to press on, this will be something worth monitoring leading up to the draft in June.
LeBron James not willing to talk about future with Lakers
It’s no secret that this season hasn’t gone as planned for LeBron James and the Lakers with the team hovering around .500 for a majority of the year.
With that being the case, LeBron recently declined to talk about his future with the team beyond this season, only adding more fuel to the speculation that he might depart in the offseason to finish his career elsewhere.

Cooper Flagg speaks out after his first game against LeBron James
The Dallas Mavericks’ No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg has often been compared to LeBron James. Many believe that Cooper Flagg has the potential to one day surpass LeBron James’ NBA legacy. For what it’s worth, Flagg has already broken James’ few records, and considering he’s 18 years old, the Dallas Mavericks star has time in his favor. But it would be easier said than done, as Flagg finally got a chance to face off against James during the Mavericks’ final NBA Cup group-stage matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers. Cooper Flagg praises LeBron James The Mavericks’ nightmarish season continued as they suffered a 129-119 defeat at the hands of their Western Conference rivals. While Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were the stars of the show, James had an off-night. Despite that, Flagg had nothing but praise for the four-time NBA champion. “It’s incredible, obviously, to see what he’s still able to do. However old he is, it’s just incredible, and I think the best thing for him is how smart he is. “He’s always one of the smartest players on the court. He played with such a high IQ, making the game easy on himself,” Flagg said after the game. “Tonight, he didn’t do anything crazy; he didn’t have to. He just kept it simple and just made the smartest plays on every possession.” Despite being 40 years old, James’ elite IQ allows him to impact the game even during off-nights, and that’s what Flagg noticed. LeBron James vs. Cooper Flagg Even before playing a single game against him, James predicted Flagg’s development would be similar to Kawhi Leonard. However, Flagg has yet to reach that level as he had 13 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists against the Lakers. He didn’t stuff the stat sheet, but it was still an excellent double-double in the loss. On the other hand, James finished the night with 13 points, five rebounds and seven assists in the 10-point win. Looking at their stats, it makes sense why Mark Cuban compared Flagg to James. But let’s not forget that the two stars on the opposite end of their careers.
After missing out on Lane Kiffin, Florida has new top target in coaching search
The Florida Gators won't be hiring Lane Kiffin as their next head coach, but there's a new top candidate in Gainesville. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall is now the leading candidate for the head coaching position. Sumrall has also reportedly withdrawn his name from consideration for the HC role at Auburn, leaving his options open between remaining at Tulane and moving to Florida. The Gators stand at 3-8 before Saturday's rivalry game against Florida State and have fired former head coach Billy Napier after a 3-4 start to his fourth season in the Swamp. Thamel reported on Friday that Florida had stopped considering Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin as a candidate, amid Kiffin's upcoming decision to either stay at Ole Miss or accept the head coaching job at LSU. Why Florida would be interested in Jon Sumrall According to Thamel, Sumrall is expected to decide by Sunday whether he will stay in New Orleans or move southeast to Gainesville. Sumrall, 43, is in his second year at Tulane, having taken over after Willie Fritz was named head coach at the University of Houston. Sumrall maintained the momentum of Tulane's football program established by Fritz, leading the Green Wave to the American Athletic Conference championship game a year ago. This season, No. 24 Tulane is 9-2 heading into Saturday's regular season finale against Charlotte. A win on Saturday night would secure a home game for the Green Wave in the AAC championship against North Texas. If Sumrall and Tulane win the AAC title, a College Football Playoff spot could be possible. With Sumrall's impressive record as a head coach — 41-11 between his tenures at Troy and Tulane — it's easy to see why the powers that be in Gainesville have identified him as the top target in Florida's coaching search now that Kiffin is out of the running.
'I’m Doing It': Scribe on Maple Leafs Trading Future Star in Quinn Hughes Deal
In another world, where the Toronto Maple Leafs have 30 points and are playoff contenders, looking to capitalize on a window to win, does the organization take a run at a generational defenseman that could put them over the top? One host and analyst thinks so, arguing that he would trade just about anything, including Matthew Knies, to acquire Quinn Hughes. Talk about whether the Vancouver Canucks will eventually trade Hughes is everywhere these days. The Canucks have told 31 other teams they are open to moving veterans and are making pending UFAs available via trade. To this point, that doesn’t include Hughes. However, he remains the big name, and the talking point around him is that he looks unhappy. Despite saying he’s committed to the team, it appears he’s moving on at some point. Perhaps the Canucks should get the most they can, while he can fetch a massive return. Would The Maple Leafs Be Interested? Who’s kidding whom? If Hughes becomes available, the Leafs will make a call to find out the asking price. And Bryan Hayes noted recently that if that price is Matthew Knies, he’s doing it. Should Toronto get two possible playoff runs out of Hughes — even if he eventually makes his way to New Jersey as a free agent to play with his brothers — Hughes is such a difference-maker, the Maple Leafs have to consider the trade. Hayes even said he’s throwing in picks and whatever else is required to acquire the second-best defensman in the world. Hayes said: “Let’s say the Leafs are really rocking right now, and it’s going to cost you Matthew Knies, I’m doing it, that’s what I’m telling you. I’m doing that, plus the picks and the prospects, like, that’s how good Quinn Hughes is.” Why Quinn Hughes Would Be A Risk For the Maple Leafs Hayes is suggesting the Leafs move on from arguably their best young forward. And, he’s suggesting they do so, even if they know that Hughes is ultimately not re-signing in Toronto. That makes any theorized deal all about how good Toronto thinks they can be with Hughes and without Knies over the next two seasons. It might not look like it so far this season, but the Maple Leafs’ window to win is now with Auston Matthews and William Nylander in their prime. In fact, that window is closing fast and if the team doesn’t push this season and next, they might be looking at starting over. How much of an impact can Hughes make with this roster? That’s the real question. If you were to describe the ideal fit, Hughes is it. Whether moving on from Knies to get what you need is the right play would be heavily debated. Getting Hughes would be huge. Losing Knies means immediately looking for another player to do what he does and at the same or a lower price. That’s no easy task, given how much the salary cap is rising and with what good forwards are commanding. Winning is the priority, but at what cost? Hughes is a long-term rental, probably nothing more. Hayes is behind the idea that you do what you have to, but is he right? There’s no indication a Hughes trade is close. There’s no sign that the Maple Leafs have eyes on him. But, if the opportunity fell into their lap, does GM Brad Treliving do whatever it takes to make that possibilty a reality?
Tigers Make Perfect Sense for Superstar Free Agent Outfielder This Winter
The Detroit Tigers go into free agency without having landed one of the top names on the market for some time now, and fans are ready for this to change. Whether it's a second ace starter, a flame-throwing relief pitcher to complete the bullpen or even a star slugger who changes the complexion of the lineup, the Tigers are hungry for a big hot stove move, and this could be the offseason for them to do it. The organization has clearly taken a leap in the last two years, however they are also missing a gear when it comes to taking that final step into World Series contender. One area they could upgrade to make it happen is the outfield, and the perfect fit is out there. While much of the noise in this market revolves around Kyle Tucker, New York Yankees star Cody Bellinger could prove to be the best potential name in the outfield for Detroit. Bellinger Brings Tigers Defensive Versatility and a Solid Glove While Tucker's glove seems to get all the love in terms of the free agents, advanced numbers from the last couple of years indicate that it's actually Bellinger who has the Gold Glove quality defense. Not to mention the fact that Bellinger brings the versatility to play whichever position he's asked, which realistically could be any of them in the outfield as well as first base to spell Spencer Torkelson. There's an argument to be made to move on from Parker Meadows in center despite his elite defense, where Bellinger would excel. He can also play in the right field platoon with ease, or even left field should Detroit decide they are tired of too many strikeouts from Riley Greene. Needless to say though, where Bellinger really would be a difference maker is with a bat in his hands. Tigers Lineup Instantly Becomes Deadly with Bellinger Added In 2025 during his first season with the Yankees, the 2019 National League MVP had his best campaign since that year. After being traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Bronx in a salary dump, Bellinger went on to slash .272/.334/.480 with 29 home runs and 98 RBI, racking up a 5.1 bWAR in 152 games played. A dangerous power slugger who clearly excels in the contact department as well, Bellinger was the kind of professional hitter Detroit seemed to be missing down the stretch of the 2025 season. The Tigers have done an admirable job of building through drafting and developing, and it's why they are where they are with even more talent on the way. Great teams supplement their elite development with bringing in stars though, and this is a star-driven league. If Detroit wants to get themselves to a point where they're seen as a real force to be reckoned with and get over that World Series hump, signing Bellinger is the exact type of move they should make. Time will tell if the Tigers actually show any real interest, but if they want to be taken seriously, then they absolutely should make a run at Bellinger.
