The best animated movies of 2016
It was a great year for animated movies. There were plenty of crowd-pleasers that left the whole family entertained as well as challenging, smaller movies that used the format in interesting fashions. Plus a new Studio Ghibli! These are, in no particular order, the 20 best animated films of 2016.
Zootopia
Critics and moviegoers loved "Zootopia." It's funny and engaging for kids and adults and has a positive message to boot.
Moana
Disney's newest princess is here to stay. This is how you do great family-friendly adventure.
Finding Dory
The scatter-brained Dory takes center stage in this sequel to "Finding Nemo." Funny and poignant, it'll leave you laughing and crying.
The Secret Life of Pets
Fast-paced and funny while at the same time cheerful, it might have one of the best voice casts ever assembled for an animated movie, too.
Sausage Party
This one is firmly for the adults in the room. What does your food do when you're not around? We'll probably never get an R-rated "Toy Story," but it'd probably look a lot like this.
Trolls
The kooky-haired dolls finally made it to the big-screen and it's as bright and silly as you'd think. It's aimed at younger kids, but adults won't be disappointed either, especially if the little ones demand repeat viewings.
Ice Age: Collision Course
The "Ice Age" series is endlessly entertaining and adorable, and the new addition is no different.
Kung Fu Panda 3
This movie, like Jack Black's Po, is deceptive to the eyes. Sure he's chubby and goofy, but he's also sweet, funny and enjoyable to all.
Kubo and the Two Strings
This film is visually stunning but also incredibly smartly written. Probably the Best Animated Film Oscar front-runner, see it as soon as you can. You won't regret it.
Norm of the North
This movie looks so strange, but that bear will probably make you chuckle. The movie's strong eco-friendly message is worthwhile, too.
The Red Turtle
This movie is dialogue-free but with gorgeous visuals and a compelling, simple story. Studio Ghibli is going to be just fine in the wake of Hayao Miyazaki's retirement.
Storks
Charming and manic, "Storks" brings that story we tell to life with delightful animation and a stacked voice cast.
Sing
Talk about a cast full of ringers! A bunch of charming animals putting on a big show while also extremely emotional? "Sing" is something kids and adults will go wild for.
Tower
Definitely not for kids, "Tower" is actually a documentary about a mass shooting that happened at the University of Texas in 1966. It's harrowing, but the animated re-creations and interview portions are stunning.
Batman: The Killing Joke
Again, not for kids, but Alan Moore's most famous Batman story is available to watch now, and it's as violent and thought-provoking as you'd expect.
The Angry Birds Movie
Beating Uber to the big screen, this one's rambunctious and silly with tons of jokes for kids and grown-ups as well. Beats flicking your smartphone screen, too.
Anomalisa
It's a Charlie Kaufman movie, so you know it's introspective and acerbic. But it's also genuine and real, despite being as out there as the rest of Kaufman's work.
The Little Prince
Another movie with a cast where you can't count the Oscar nominations with one hand, "The Little Prince" is gorgeously animated, and while it's not a completely faithful adaptation of the book, its heart is in the right place.
The Wild Life
What an interesting movie. A German film in which a parrot retells the story of Robinson Crusoe? We know, but it works.
Quackerz
Russian animation is always really interesting, even with English voice actors. Different sets of ducks band together and try to work with humans. Lessons and fun for the whole family.
