The story that has continued to dominate the football world weeks after the 2025 NFL Draft was the fall of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders down draft boards.
Due to his connection with Shedeur and the Sanders family, many looked at the direction of Las Vegas Raiders minority owner Tom Brady as one of the parties responsible for the event. With the Raiders looking for a quarterback and drafting North Dakota State’s Cam Miller in the sixth round, fans believed that Brady directly told the team to avoid Sanders. On the Impaulsive podcast, Brady hoped to clear the air.
“That’s a good question. I wasn’t a part of any evaluation process,” Brady said. despite stammering at the beginning.
“I actually texted Shedeur because I know him very well and I said ‘Dude, whatever happens, wherever you go, that’s your first day. Day 2 matters more than the draft. I was [pick] 199. Who could speak on it better than me? Use that as motivation. You’re going to get your chances. Go take advantage of them.’”
Despite trying to be diplomatic on the matter, some are far from convinced by Brady’s story.
Analysts have criticized Brady in his handling of the matter, and NBC Sports host Mike Florio was the latest to provide a scathing critique.
“Brady is very unconvincing as he stammers and stutters his way through until he gets to, it’s a good question… Anyone who remembers the initial Deflategate press conference, Tom Brady is a horrible liar, which is good. I’d rather deal with somebody who’s a horrible liar than a really good liar, because with a really good liar, it’s like trying to figure out what owes the mentalist is up to,” said Florio on Wednesday’s episode of Pro Football Talk Live.
“With a bad liar, we at least know he’s full of sh*t. He kind of knows he’s full of sh*t, but he’s saying what he has to say, and we can make sense of it. He doesn’t want to affect his relationship with Shedeur Sanders. Of course, he was involved in the evaluation of the quarterbacks. Of course, Tom Brady. That’s one of the reasons why he has a sweetheart deal, to buy the team for peanuts in comparison to its market value.”
Even as the speculation continues to roll in, it does not answer the questions that come with accusing Brady of tampering with Sanders’s draft stock.
On the surface, it does not appear as though there was anything for Brady to gain by colluding with other owners to move Sanders down the boards. Even if there were some red flags regarding his character, Brady would feel more confident than most about his team and the infrastructure needed to help Sanders thrive at the NFL level. For some reason, however, the Raiders did not feel they had what Sanders needed, causing him to fall to the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round.
It feels like Brady will be embroiled in this conflict for quite a while before things get sorted out.
