One doesn't have to look far in the media for praise where new Washington Commanders wide receiver Jaylin Lane is concerned. Most analysts believe Adam Peters could have another steal on his hands with the explosive playmaker, who's got the tools needed to far exceed his fourth-round status with a smooth transition to the professional ranks.
One respected draft figure thought an overlooked part of Lane's game could be more impactful than anything else during his first year in Washington.
Field Yates of ESPN named Lane among his non-first-round prospects who could have a bigger-than-anticipated influence on his team as a rookie. The analyst thought his skills could force his way onto the offensive rotation quickly. However, he believes the former Virginia Tech standout's prowess in the return game could leave a monumental impression if given the chance.
While [Jaylin] Lane will have a chance to earn receiver snaps for Washington, what most excites me about his early impact is in the kicking game. Lane is arguably the best punt returner in the draft class. Back in 2021, he averaged 15.5 yards per return, second best in FBS. He's shifty and instinctive, and he can flat-out fly. Olamide Zaccheaus handled the highest number of punt returns for the Commanders in 2024 but signed with the Bears this offseason. Lane should help pile up hidden yards.Field Yates
Judging by the reaction of special teams coordinator Larry Izzo when the Commanders took Lane at No. 128 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, he seconds this notion.
Lane's elusiveness and dynamism with the football in his hands could be an asset. Austin Ekeler earned second-team All-Pro honors last season as a kick returner. Looking at the concussion issues suffered by the veteran in 2024, giving the role to a younger, faster option might prolong the running back's shelf life along the way.
This adds another wrinkle to Lane's short-term outlook. He's got big ambitions to carve out a prominent spot on the wideout depth chart instantly. If it takes a little longer to firmly establish himself, contributing to the return game will suffice until confidence in his aspirations increases.
It's not a bad option for the Commanders to have at their disposal. Lane's versatility and love for football are two primary reasons why Washington was so enticed. And there are some shrewd minds in the building capable of maximizing his skill set from the moment he steps onto an NFL field.
Lane fits Kliff Kingsbury's scheme perfectly. But don't dismiss the player's electrifying ability to create highlight reel plays on special teams either.
