Manchester United look set for a busy final week of the summer transfer window, with a number of issues still to be resolved.
Just last week, there was not much noise around the club in terms of new signings or departures. But a slow start to the Premier League season has changed that.
United have picked up just one point from their opening two matches, and Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Fulham only added to the pressure.
One area under scrutiny is the midfield, where Kobbie Mainoo’s lack of minutes has become a talking point.
That could force some changes in that area. The goalkeeping situation is another issue drawing attention as well.
Last week, Altay Bayindir was expected to leave Old Trafford. But with Amorim now preferring him over Andre Onana, things may have changed quickly.
Senne Lammens is closing in on a move to Old Trafford, having been left out of Royal Antwerp’s squad at the weekend ahead of his transfer.
Once the new keeper is added, one will need to make way. Right now, it seems Andre Onana is the most likely candidate to move.
United in Focus, via Graeme Bailey, reports that intermediaries have spoken with several clubs about a loan deal for Onana, including West Ham United.
West Ham, having already secured Mads Hermansen, are reportedly exploring additional goalkeeping options, with Onana believed to be an option.
United in Focus adds that Onana’s view of his situation at United has shifted recently. While he understood being left out against Arsenal, his exclusion from the Fulham match caught him off guard.
With Ruben Amorim now appearing to favour Altay Bayindir and Lammens coming in from Antwerp, Onana is weighing up his future more seriously than before.
Bailey also noted that Lammens might even step straight into the starting role:
“Onana is now unhappy at this current situation and he is ready to look at options and West Ham could be one of those, but there are others.
“With Lammens coming in we could be about to see a changing of the guard at United – Lammens was never really seen as coming straight in as number one, but it could play out in that way.”
Onana was expected to leave earlier this summer, but an injury during pre-season quieted things. He expressed a clear desire to stay, which seemed settled for a time.
But with Bayindir now clearly established as first choice, it is obvious Amorim does not see a future for his former number one. Even though Bayindir has not exactly impressed in his two starts so far, it gives the Portuguese coach an easy path to hand Lammens the job immediately.
At this stage, it is looking likely that Lammens will start the season as United’s main goalkeeper, with Bayindir acting as his backup. Meanwhile, efforts to move Onana on appear to be gaining pace.
