Anna DeBeer named AVCA East Region Player of the Year; Multiple Players Recognized

Louisville, KY – In an exciting announcement, University of Louisville outside hitter Anna DeBeer was crowned East Region Player of the Year by the AVCA for the 2023 Division I Women’s Volleyball All-Region teams and award winners. DeBeer’s outstanding performance throughout the season earned her this prestigious title.

The University of Louisville dominated the All-East Region team, with six players earning spots on the First Team. The six Cardinals recognized were Cara Cresse, Anna DeBeer, Elle Glock, Aiko Jones, Charitie Luper, and Elena Scott. Additionally, Phekran Kong received an Honorable Mention All-East Region selection, solidifying the Cardinals’ dominance in the region.

The AVCA selected 14 All-Region team members and additional honorable mention selections for each of the 10 regions. These student-athletes represent 103 different schools, with the University of Louisville and the University of Pittsburgh leading the way with seven selections each.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the standout performances from the Cardinals this season:

Charitie Luper, wearing jersey number 4, was an integral part of the team’s success this season. Luper secured a spot on the First Team All-East Region. She ranked second on the team in kills (296) and points (343.5). Luper showcased her skills against top opponents, with an improved average of 3.16 kills per set. She recorded four double-doubles and had several matches with hitting percentages over .400. Luper contributed 19 matches with double-digit points, including a season-high of 25 points against #7 ranked Pittsburgh.

Elle Glock, wearing jersey number 5, also earned a well-deserved spot on the First Team All-East Region. Glock proved to be a force to be reckoned with, ranking No. 50 in assists per set and No. 93 in total assists in Division I. She excelled against top opponents, averaging 10.78 assists per set. Glock recorded four double-doubles and showcased her versatility with contributions in blocks, kills, and aces. Her season-high of 60 assists against #7 Pittsburgh was a standout performance.

Phekran Kong, recognized with Honorable Mention All-East Region, played a vital role on the team, particularly in blocking. Kong recorded a career-high nine blocks in the first round against Wright State. She showcased her efficiency in swinging, with five matches hitting over .500. Kong’s contributions on both offense and defense were laudable, totaling 170 kills, 93 blocks, and 15 digs. Her strong presence at the net was evident in the final two matches against #7 Pittsburgh and #12 Georgia Tech, where she recorded five blocks in each match.

Cara Cresse, who secured a spot on the First Team All-East Region, demonstrated her prowess in blocking and hitting. Cresse maintained an impressive hitting percentage of .437, ranking fifth nationally. She recorded several career-high performances, including a match with a hitting percentage of .500 and 13 kills against Wright State. Cresse played a key role in the team’s success in the NCAA Tournament, contributing 22 kills and exceptional hitting percentages.

Anna DeBeer, the standout player of the season, was crowned East Region Player of the Year. DeBeer led the team in kills, points, and double-doubles. She showcased her ability to perform at the highest level against top opponents, leading in kills, aces, and points in 14 matches against Top 50-ranked teams. DeBeer’s impressive season included several career-high performances and recognitions. Her outstanding contributions earned her the title of ACC Player of the Year and recognition on multiple All-Region and All-ACC teams throughout her collegiate career.

Aiko Jones, recognized as an All-East Region player, made significant contributions to the team this season. Jones started every match and showcased her skills in kills, aces, blocks, and digs. She played a key role in the team’s success against top opponents, ranking third in kills, points, aces, and blocks. Jones consistently delivered double-digit kills and hitting percentages over .500 in several matches.

Elena Scott, finishing off the Cardinals’ dominant presence in the All-East Region team, earned a spot on the First Team. Scott led the team in digs and aces and ranked second in assists. Her solid defensive performances were evident in her 16 matches of 15+ digs and seven matches with 20+ digs. Scott’s outstanding contributions earned her recognitions as an AVCA Second-Team All-American in 2022 and spots on multiple All-Region and All-ACC teams.
