Arizona hires Becky Burke as new women’s basketball coach

TUCSON — The University of Arizona has hired Becky Burke as its new women’s basketball head coach, the school announced Wednesday, April 9, ushering in a new era for the Wildcats following the departure of Adia Barnes.

Burke arrives in Tucson after a successful three-year run at the University at Buffalo, where she led the Bulls to a program-record 30 wins and captured the 2024–25 WNIT championship. Known for her fast-paced offense and ability to develop talent, Burke has quickly established herself as one of the rising stars in collegiate coaching.

She replaces Barnes, who stepped down last week after eight seasons to take over the women’s basketball program at SMU. Barnes helped elevate Arizona to national prominence, highlighted by a national championship game appearance in 2021.

Arizona athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois said Burke reflects the values the program is built on — leadership, development, and a relentless drive to win. They are very confident in what Burke will do to elevate the program for success.

At just 35 years old, Burke already boasts head coaching experience from USC Upstate, Charleston, and most recently Buffalo. A former standout at Louisville, Burke is known for her tenacity and no-nonsense approach that has resonated with players and staff alike.

Her first challenge in Tucson will be stabilizing a roster undergoing change and positioning Arizona to remain competitive in the Big 12 conference. With her track record and momentum from a title-winning season, the Wildcats believe they’ve found the right leader to carry the torch forward.
