Authorities say they have made an arrest after reports of shots fired at the 3M Arena at Mariucci on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.
The U of M Police Department said at around 9 p.m. that officers and paramedics were on the scene, and in an update at 9:25 p.m. said a suspect is in custody.
"Stay away from the area until further information is given," the alert said.
According to a schedule, the arena was hosting the commencement ceremony for Wayzata High School, which listed as starting at 6:30 p.m.
While the U of M alert says shots were fired "at Mariucci Arena," it's not clear whether this was inside or outside the building.
Gov. Tim Walz's statement suggested the latter, with the governor tweeting: "Horrific news of a shooting near Mariucci Arena during a graduation event tonight – a time of celebration that should never have turned into one of fear and sadness."
"As officials take the suspect into custody I’m praying for the injured. We’re in touch with [U of M Police] and the state stands ready to help in any way we can."
The Minneapolis Police Department told Bring Me The News that the University of Minnesota PD is the lead agency in the investigation, with city officers providing assistance at the scene.
