Chelsea’s latest academy star Tyrique George is the subject of a transfer tug-of-war, with AS Roma, RB Leipzig, and multiple Premier League sides circling – but the final decision rests firmly at Stamford Bridge.
At just 19 years old, George has already forced his way into the senior picture, making eight Premier League appearances last season and impressing with his pace, flair, and direct running. His potential is clear, but so too are the obstacles in front of him.
Chelsea’s relentless squad rebuild under Enzo Maresca has created one of the deepest rosters in the league. While that speaks volumes about the ambition of the club, it also makes it harder for homegrown talents like George to carve out consistent game time.
The Blues are understood to be open but cautious. According to Fabrizio Romano via X, they are willing to consider a loan to aid his development, or even a permanent sale if the right offer arrives, but mindful of the risk of losing another Cobham gem too soon.
The most concrete interest so far has come from RB Leipzig, who have built their identity on turning young talent into stars. Reports suggest they’re preparing a €15m+ offer with a long-term contract, seeing George as their next project in the mould of Christopher Nkunku or Xavi Simons.
For George, the Bundesliga would offer a clearer pathway to first-team football, but Chelsea know how dangerous it can be to let a young player thrive abroad only to see their value soar beyond reach.
Meanwhile, AS Roma have reactivated their pursuit. With Jadon Sancho reluctant to move to Italy, George has become a prime alternative. Roma’s pitch is simple: he’d walk into a senior role in Serie A, with guaranteed minutes in both domestic and European football.
For a teenager desperate for continuity, the idea has obvious appeal, though whether Chelsea will sanction it is another matter. What Should Chelsea Do?
From a Chelsea perspective, this is a familiar dilemma. The club has poured resources into the academy, producing generation after generation of elite prospects – but too often those players find their breakthrough elsewhere.
George is one of Cobham’s brightest hopes and at 19, still mouldable into the system Maresca is building. Letting him go permanently, especially at a relatively modest fee, could come back to haunt the club, as we’ve seen with other departures.
A loan deal, ideally within the Premier League or to a top European club with guarantees of minutes, could be the smartest compromise. It would allow George to gain the experience he craves without Chelsea closing the door on his future at Stamford Bridge.
