Tottenham Hotspur suffered a cruel blow early in pre-season against Newcastle United when James Maddison had to be stretchered off with what looked like a serious injury. Initial fears were confirmed when it emerged that the Englishman had suffered a potentially season-ending ACL injury.
To make matters worse for Thomas Frank, his alternative, Dejan Kulusevski, is also out currently, nursing an injury. This has forced the Danish tactician to use Pape Matar Sarr in that position. The Senegalese has done well as a box-crashing #10 but he isn’t a creative force to reckon with.
Spurs have been trying hard to sign a new #10 this summer. There have been a number of players who have been linked with the club who can play in the attacking midfield position. One of the latest names to have been added to the list is West Ham United star Lucas Paqueta, who has started the new season well.
In the last 24/48 hours, Tottenham have made some calls to understand the situation of Lucas Paqueta.

Now, as per Fichajes, Aston Villa have now joined Tottenham in the race for Paqueta. The Brazilian playmaker is very experienced. He would add something unique to Thomas Frank’s team in terms of creativity and can settle in without much hassle considering he has played in the Premier League before.
Paqueta has continually been linked with an exit from the London Stadium this summer with clubs like Flamengo linked with a potential move. Labelled a player who “has a place in any team of the world”, the 28-year-old would be a very good addition to Tottenham in the immediate future.
A classical #10, the Brazilian has a flair and quality on the ball that allows him to excel at playing inbetween the lines. Not afraid of operating in tight spaces, Paqueta not only has the ability to pick a pass out for a teammate, but can also come up with the outrageous in terms of finishes.
Ultimately, it could all come down to the price tag. With Villa also interested, Spurs need to negotiate well to convince the player to come to North London. The next few days should provide a clearer picture of how things play out on this front and if Paqueta is seen wearing a Tottenham jersey for the rest of the season and beyond.
