Badgers’ Staff remain close to big 2027 Maple Grove Wing
Badgers' Staff remain close to big 2027 Maple Grove Wing 1 Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard, left, shares a laughter with Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo before tipoff of the first half of Big Ten Tournament semifinal at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. on Saturday, March 15, 2025.

The Wisconsin Badgers’ staff firmly believes the 2027 basketball recruiting class is special, and have now approached the class as such.

With the new changing landscape of college basketball and collegiate sports in general, the transfer portal has become the strongest tool to use when constructing a roster. Recruiting high school players still has a place in the sport, but with thousands of potentially instant upgrades, the same attention has not been paid to high school recruits.

Wisconsin, however, still firmly believes there is a place for high school talent on the roster as the staff has begun to push for certain 2027 class names.

Baboucarr Ann, a 2027 four-star wing from Osseo, Minnesota, has become a player the Badgers’ staff believes could fit into the team flawlessly. The 6-foot-4 wing is an explosive and versatile athlete known for his physicality and immense scoring potential. Ann has the power to score over bigger players and the court vision to make key plays happen.

The Badgers’ staff is still in the early stages of connecting with Ann, but the recruit has quickly risen on the boards for the program. Ann himself is new to the recruiting process and has only been in contact with a handful of programs thus far.

An offer might not be on the table just yet from the Badgers’ staff, but Ann remains a top current target in the 2027 class. Wisconsin has a history of strategically offering scholarships and waiting for the “right moment” to do so.

At the moment, Ann only has a handful of offers on the table from programs such as Iowa State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, and Arizona State. The Cyclones have been very close to the recruit and already have three documented unofficial visits with Ann. Iowa State is by far the leader early on for the recruit, but many programs are just starting to develop a relationship which means a commitment is likely still not close.

Minnesota is an intriguing program moving forward as Ann is a native of Osseo, which is just 21 minutes down the street from the Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers have an early offer and plenty of interest in the wing as Ann has become a priority target in the 2027 class for the staff.

Iowa State and Minnesota are no longer alone as Wisconsin continues to stay in touch with the recruit. The Badgers have mainly been in contact with coaches around Ann, but will have the recruit in town this weekend for a visit.

Wisconsin has mainly moved funds towards roster retention and transfer portal assets, but the 2027 class may very well be an exception. The in-state class in Wisconsin in particular is very talented and likely will not receive the same interest as past classes around the country due to teams focusing on the transfer portal. The Badgers could be in a unique spot that would see multiple priority targets land in Madison.
