A beloved high school football player is dead from a "devastating" rare disease at 17 years old this weekend.

Waseh Sultani, a 17-year-old high school football player from Paramus, New Jersey, has died. He had recently been diagnosed with a devastating rare disease called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. The rare and often fatal disease happens when the immune system abnormally overreacts and no longer works properly, according to the Cleveland Clinic. There are two types of the disease - one triggered by genetics and one by infection.

His family confirmed his passing in a GoFundMe post.

"Waseh, a student at Paramus High School, was recently diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis and courageously battled this devastating illness, spending weeks in and out of the hospital.Despite every effort, Waseh sadly passed away, leaving behind a heartbroken family who loved him deeply," his family stated.

"Soraya is now facing every parent’s worst nightmare while also trying to care for Waseh’s siblings, Abe and Haleena, during this incredibly painful time. No mother should have to endure this kind of loss, especially while carrying the emotional and financial burden on her own."

His high school announced his passing, as well.

"Paramus Football mourns the loss of our brother, Waseh Sultani. He was a great teammate, a hard worker, and someone who brought energy to our program every day. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him. We will honor Waseh by sticking together and supporting one another the way he always did. Rest easy, Waseh," the school announced.

The GoFundMe has raised close to $40,000 so far.

“Soraya and her family are deeply grateful for all of the love, prayers, generosity, and support shown during this incredibly difficult time. Your kindness has meant so much to them and has brought comfort as they mourn this heartbreaking loss,” the post said. “Today, Waseh was laid to rest, and the family is so appreciative of everyone who has kept them in their thoughts and prayers.”
