Bengals coach confirms Dylan Fairchild compares favorably to 3-time Pro Bowler he directly developed for Cincinnati's rival

Scott Peters as a head offensive line coach is still a large unknown. The Cincinnati Bengals hired him for the position after he spent just one year working the same job for the New England Patriots in 2024. He was but an assistant o-line coach for the Cleveland Browns from 2020-23 and a consultant before that on top of his work starting Tip of the Spear.

During those years in Cleveland, Peters worked alongside Bill Callahan developing the Browns' impressive offensive line that gave Cincinnati fits during several "Battle of Ohio" matchups. Peters being second-in-command allowed him to spend more personal time teaching up one player in particular to an elite level.

Peters believes Dylan Fairchild, the Bengals' third-round pick from this year's NFL Draft, compares very similarly to that same player he used to coach.

Scott Peters assesses comparison between Dylan Fairchild, Wyatt Teller

Browns guard Wyatt Teller was originally a fifth-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2018. The Browns traded for him prior to the 2019 season, a year before Peters was hired by the club. Once Peters got to directly work with him starting in the 2020 offseason, Teller's performance improved dramatically and he earned Second-Team All-Pro status. A year later, he earned the first of his now three Pro Bowl honors.

"Coach Peters is awesome," Teller said in 2021. "He's an absolute madman who understands the psychology of leverage, grip and where you need your hands to do certain things. He's talented at what he does, and it comes from his mixed martial arts background."

Teller's rise to becoming one of the best guards in the game at his peak had a lot to do with Peters' coaching. As it happens, Teller was compared to Fairchild during the pre-draft process by The Athletic's Dane Brugler among others. Fairchild ended up impressing Peters at Georgia's pro day and the Bengals ended up drafting him in the third round

When asked about the comparison between Fairchild and Teller, Peters gave it a thumbs up.

"Fair assessment," Peters said to Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson. "Very much similar physically. Dylan has that in his body. He's a really strong kind. He's just kind of learning the game, and he understands the game. I'm looking forward to working with him and seeing what we've got."

The two are very similar physically as Peters points out. Teller was just under 6-5 and weight 314 pounds coming out of Virginia Tech in 2018. Fairchild measured in at just over 6-5 and 318 pounds back in February. Their hand sizes are within a quarter of an inch, and their wingspans and arm lengths are each about an inch apart. They each ran a 5.24 40-yard dash as well.

Drafting Fairchild will become a phenomenal decision if his career becomes anything close to Teller's, but the start of it will likely be different. Teller began his rookie season on the bench for Buffalo and didn't even start right away for Cleveland. Fairchild might be Cincinnati's Week 1 starter at left guard.

For a soon-to-be 22-year old who's still kind of "learning the game," he'll need to learn quickly to be of use in that role.

The learning officially begins this Friday, May 9 when Fairchild partakes in the Bengals' rookie minicamp.
