Key Points:

  • Colorado fell to No. 25 BYU in a tight 24–21 loss.
  • Colorado fans chanted an anti-Mormon slur during the game.
  • The Big 12 fined Colorado $50,000 and issued a public reprimand.

In what was an intense college football clash between Big 12 powers, the Colorado Buffaloes (2-3) ultimately fell to the No. 25 BYU (4-0) Cougars by a score of 24-21.

Led by true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who completed 19-of-27 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns along with 98 yards rushing, the Cougars were able to overcome an early 14-0 deficit to stave off the upset.

While Colorado fans were understandably upset with their team's performance, they resorted to an inappropriate chant directed at BYU, a private institution sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

At some point during the game, the crowd chanted "(Expletive) the Mormons." An inexcusable chant that led to Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark announcing a $50,000 fine on Tuesday.

"Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference," read the statement. "While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday's game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Colorado will receive a $50,000 fine in accordance with our Conference policies."

Although they still ended up receiving a fine, the program did take to X on the Sunday after the game to issue an apology and condemn the hate speech used.

"CU Boulder is committed to fostering an environment where all individuals—students, staff, faculty, alumni, opposing fans and other visitors—feel welcome and safe," read the statement. "Discriminatory language and hostile conduct have no place at our athletic events or anywhere on our campus."

As for happenings on the field, Colorado will head to Fort Worth on Saturday to take on TCU (3-1), while BYU will return to Provo to host West Virginia (2-3).
