Bill Belichick could have set off a chain reaction, and it could have a big effect on both LSU and Notre Dame
Robert Deutsch / USA TODAY NETWORK

There is no bigger news in college football right now than former New England Patriots legend Bill Belichick taking over as head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels. At 72 years old, this will be Belichick’s first time coaching at the college level. Nobody knows how it will turn out, but you can bet everyone will be watching with heavy interest.

It was reported by ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter that one of the other finalists was current Cleveland Browns passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Tommy Rees, who both played and coached for Notre Dame. If not for Belichick, it was believed that Rees was the favorite for the job.

Off of first impulse, this felt like good news for the Browns to potentially retain Rees. There has also been an interesting rumor out there swirling around the former Irish signal caller. This won’t be the only job opening we could be talking about concerning Rees.

There have been some rumors coming from the LSU side with the impending decision around offensive coordinator Joe Sloan and his future. There are some who believe that Sloan could return as OC, while most expect there to be a change. That could make for a very desirable job opening.

With Rees’ history with head coach Brian Kelly, there is expected to be some heavy interest from both sides. Nothing substantial movement will happen with Sloan still in place, but the conversation is at least out there. It’s only strengthened by the fact that tight ends coach Slade Nagel is leaving the program for a different position, which would potentially be a seamless transition for Rees to take over.

Rees spent the entirety of his four-year college career with the Fighting Irish. During that stretch, Rees was able to throw 7,670 yards, and 61 touchdowns. He was better known for his role during the team’s journey to a national championship appearance in the 2012 season, where Rees was instrumental as a backup quarterback to Everett Golson.

After his playing career, Rees spent some time with both Northwestern and the San Diego Chargers before returning to Notre Dame. During his time coaching in South Bend from 2017-2022, he served between roles as the quarterback coach and the offensive coordinator for the Irish. Rees also spent 2023 as the Alabama offensive coordinator before landing in Cleveland this season.
