Bobblehead nights proving to be good-luck charm for the Toronto Blue Jays

Every team across the Major Leagues puts on fun promotions at their home ballpark. From bobbleheads to celebrating celebrities or famous players, each team’s marketing department goes into the offseason looking for the next fun idea to help bring fans into the ballpark.

The Blue Jays are no exception, and this season, they have hosted a ton of fun giveaways and event nights. This includes replica jerseys, City Connect Friday giveaways (bomber jackets, hats, and more), a Hello Kitty backpack, and much more.

One of the more popular giveaways amongst the fanbase is the various bobbleheads the Blue Jays include throughout the year. These items usually revolve around some of the club’s more popular players, and this season is no exception, with the likes of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Daulton Varsho, Alejandro Kirk and newcomers Jeff Hoffman, Anthony Santander, and Andres Gimenez all earning a collectible as well.

Ironically, while the giveaways really don’t have an impact on how things shake up on the field, it’s interesting to note that the Blue Jays do play better when fans are walking home with the memento. Of the seven bobblehead giveaways hosted this season, the Jays are 6-1 (* denotes loss)

  • March 31st – Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Silver Slugger / (5-2 – Washington Nationals)
  • April 30th – Alejandro Kirk ‘Bobble-Arm’ / (7-6 – Boston Red Sox)
  • May 14th – Daulton Varsho Gold Glove / (3-1 – Tampa Bay Rays)
  • July 21st – Jeff Hoffman ‘Thanos Inspired’ / (7-1 – Chicago White Sox)
  • July 23rd – ‘Dancing Vlad’ (8-4 – New York Yankees)
  • August 13th – Anthony Santander’s ‘Switch-Hitter’ /  ( 1-4 – Chicago Cubs)*
  • August 25th – Andres Gimenez / (10-4 – Minnesota Twins)

Looking at the list above, the only game the Blue Jays have lost was back on August 13th when they hosted the Chicago Cubs.

Cade Horton twirled a gem, striking out eight across 5 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and one earned run, while Kevin Gausman and Braydon Fisher allowed two runs apiece in the losing effort. This one seems fitting for the loss, considering the injury woes that have fallen upon Santander during his debut season with the Jays.

Switching to the positive notes, Toronto has seen more wins when they host a bobblehead promotion, and some of the players have even found a new level when they are playing on the day they are featured.

On Monday night, Andres Gimenez’s bobblehead was the promotion of the evening, and the infielder would help send fans home happy by the time the game was over.

The left-handed bat went 2 for 3 at the plate with a solo home run and a walk while accounting for three runs, helping the Jays beat Joe Ryan and the Twins by a score of 10-4.

Guerrero Jr. has been featured on two bobbleheads this season. His first game against the Nationals saw him go 1 for 4 at the plate, but his double in the bottom of the third helped extend the lead before the Jays eventually won by a score of 5-2.

The second game on July 23rd against the Yankees saw Guerrero add another double to his season tally, as the first baseman would go 2 for 5 with a single, double, and two RBIs while also crossing home plate twice in the eventual victory.

On the pitching side, Jeff Hoffman’s ‘Thanos-inspired’ bobblehead was the bobblehead against the Yankees two days before Vlad’s second bobblehead, and the right-hander put on a show for the Jays faithful.

He entered the game in the bottom of the ninth, needing to shut down the Yankees and conserve the 4-1 lead over their AL East rival. Hoffman would deliver, striking out Paul Goldschmidt and Austin Wells via the swinging K while Ben Rice went down looking. He needed 16 pitches to get through the outing and earned his 24th save of the season.

Of all the bobblehead moments this season, nothing can top what Alejandro Kirk pulled off against the Boston Red Sox.

With the score tied 6-6 heading into extra innings, the Red Sox got Anthony Santander out on a lineout before intentionally walking George Springer and Varsho to get to Kirk with the bases loaded and one out (Guerrero was the ghost runner to start the inning). The backstop would have the last laugh, as Kirk would drive a Justin Slaten fastball into the left centre field gap, scoring Guerrero and sending the Jays faithful home happy.

There is no exact science (or reason) as to why the Blue Jays have found ways to win when a bobblehead is being offered, and there likely is no correlation. However, if things continue in this direction, the Blue Jays have only one scheduled bobblehead promotion in September (Charlie Brown on September 13), and it might be wise to consider adding a few last-minute promotions as the season winds down, especially given the push for a postseason berth.
