Bologna’s season started in the worst possible way with a potentially serious injury to both Italy international Ciro Immobile and Nicolò Casale.
The veteran striker had started this evening’s Serie A opener at the Stadio Olimpico against Roma, a familiar arena indeed for the ex-Lazio captain.
He had a lively performance until suddenly pulling up mid-run to clutch the muscle just above his right knee after 30 minutes, meaning it might be a quadricep issue.
Immobile hobbled off the field and looked distraught, aware that this will stall his progress not just in Serie A, but also the Europa League.
Santiago Castro was introduced in place of the ex-Besiktas centre-forward.
It wasn’t all, as on the stroke of half-time Bologna also lost defender Casale, who was at full stretch to control a ball and grabbed the back of his thigh.
The suspicions here are of a potential hamstring strain and he was replaced by Martin Vitik.
