The star-studded New York Mets are more inconsistent than they should be, but they're getting the job done against the first-place Philadelphia Phillies. After trouncing them 13-3 on Monday, they beat them 6-5 on a walk-off single by outfielder Brandon Nimmo on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old has been one of the Mets' most reliable players at the plate this season. He's third on the team with 118 hits, tied for third with 12 stolen bases, fourth with 20 homers, and third among position players with a 3.0 WAR. Furthermore, his latest heroic effort helped New York get to five games back of Philadelphia atop the division with five weeks left.
However, Nimmo gave his teammates all the credit postgame, via SNY.
"This is the most talented team I've ever played on, so I know exactly what we're capable of," he said. "It's just going out there and executing it every night."
Indeed, New York has more than enough elite players to be a championship-caliber squad. Outfielder Juan Soto, infielder Pete Alonso, infielder Francisco Lindor, starting pitcher Kodai Senga, and closer Edwin Diaz are all top-of-the-line talents, while dependable veterans like Nimmo and starting pitcher David Peterson to round out the roster on both sides of the ball.
Still, the Mets must be more consistent to take advantage of one of their best-ever rosters.

New York is 7-3 in its last 10 games, but went 1-9 in its previous 10. Additionally, it was 21-8 after April, but went 27-27 over the next two months.
Tuesday's win improves the Mets' August record to 9-14, which is still their worst month by winning percentage thus far (.391). This inconsistency is why they're in the final NL Wild Card spot rather than atop the NL East, although they now have a 3.5-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds in the Wild Card.
New York went on a Cinderella run to the NLCS after sneaking in the playoffs last season, but that was before it had Soto. Adding a future Hall of Famer to a postseason-caliber roster should catapult it to the next level, but baseball isn't played on paper.
Up next for the Mets is another home game vs. the Phillies before hosting the Miami Marlins in a four-game set. After that, they'll hit the road to face the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati, and Philadelphia again.
