The Milwaukee Brewers (81–50) have emerged as the best team in the National League, but they’ll need to maintain their current pace if they want to secure a fourth division title in five seasons. The second-place Chicago Cubs have inserted themselves back into the hunt.

Chicago has won three straight and now sits just five games behind Milwaukee, who has dropped five of its last seven matchups.

The Brewers’ offense has been without its young star outfielder for the entire month of August, as Jackson Chourio continues to recover from a right hamstring strain.

The 21-year-old outfielder began a rehab assignment last Friday, and his return would provide an immediate boost to a lineup that averages 5.1 runs per game—tied for second in the league.

Jackson Chourio Injury Update

Ahead of Monday’s opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, manager Pat Murphy announced that Chourio felt uneasy running the bases after hitting a double and will likely need more time on his rehab assignment.

“Jackson Chourio still has a few more days of rehab ahead of him in Nashville. He was tentative running last night when he doubled,” wrote MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy.

Milwaukee Won’t Rush Chourio Back as Playoff Push Intensifies

It’s a disappointing development for Milwaukee, as Chourio’s presence would immediately energize a lineup looking to rebound from a brief skid and build momentum heading into October.

In his second full season, Chourio has posted a .276 batting average, .311 on-base percentage, .786 OPS, 17 home runs, and 18 stolen bases—providing elite speed and respectable power.

Chourio remains a focal point of the Brewers’ long-term plans, which is why the team is taking a cautious approach with his recovery—avoiding any rush that could risk a more serious setback. The organization made that clear when they signed him to an eight-year, $82 million contract in 2023—the largest ever given to a player before making his MLB debut.
