Broncos 'Considering' Changing Course On 1st Round Pick After Visit

The Denver Broncos are widely believed to be targeting a "joker" early on in the draft; a tight end or running back with excellent receiving abilities.

With the top joker prospects: running backs, Ashton Jeanty and Omarion Hampton, and tight ends, Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland, all potentially off the board by the time Denver makes their selection at #20, the Broncos may be preparing to move in a different direction with their first pick.

Mike Klis of 9News reports that the Broncos are scheduled to meet with Texas' Matthew Golden on Wednesday.

Golden, who ran the fastest time at the NFL Combine in February at 4.29, is considered to be one of the most electric deep threats in this year's class, and has the opportunity to be the first pure wideout off the board (after CB/WR prospect, Travis Hunter).

Receiver is certainly a partial need for the Broncos at this point, with Courtland Sutton the only receiver to obtain much more than 500 yards receiving in 2024 - Marvin Mims was next up at 503 yards.

With Mims, Troy Franklin and impressive seventh round rookie, Devaughn Vele, all showing promise, many believed that head coach Sean Payton would ride with Sutton alongside the young developing WRs.

The team already has two speedy threats in Mims and Franklin, who ran 4.38 and 4.41 40s at the combine in their respective draft classes, but Golden is a different beast.

For a team who wants to win now; and one who may be eyeing a long-term replacement for Sutton, whose contract expires at the end of the season - Golden could well be worth the investment if he is still there at #20.
