Broncos Sign Rare Punter: Report

The Denver Broncos recently took a direction that teams seldom get to go when it comes to punting.

Mike Klis of 9 News reported the Broncos have signed venter punter Matt Haack to a one-year contract. A former Arizona State standout, Haack has played with eight different teams in his career.

"Haack was (special teams coordinator) Darren Rizzi’s punter in Miami," Klis noted. "A left-footed, directional, hang-time type that is preferred in altitude environment."

There are normally fewer than 10 left-footed punters in the NFL at any given time, which gives the Broncos a rare feature on special teams. As Washington Post reporter Alex Prewitt wrote in 2023, left-footed punting prospects are often called by teams for game-scouting purposes rather than a roster spot.

That even occurred with the Broncos once in 2023 as left-footed punter Brock Miller explained to Prewitt. Denver had the Washington Commanders and lefty Tress Way on the schedule at the time in Week 2 of the 2023 season.

“It’s giving their returners a chance to catch a counterclockwise, left-footed spiral off a live leg instead of a machine,” Miller told Prewitt. “That’s the common denominator with these quote-unquote workouts.”

That said, Haack has 103 games of experience and a 44.7 yards per punt career average. Denver looks poised to make Haack the team's punter for 2025 unless the team drafts another or if another opportunity comes up.

Haack played the first four years of his career with the Miami Dolphins between 2017 and 2020. He then spent a season with the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, and Cleveland Browns in successive seasons. Most recently, he punted in four games for the New York Giants in 2024 amid a 47-yards-per-punt average.
