The Cleveland Browns held two days of rookie minicamp open to the media on Friday and Saturday. Much of the attention was focused on the two quarterbacks the Browns selected in the NFL Draft.
Cleveland had both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders participating in practice. Gabriel went first in drills, which makes sense given that the Oregon product was selected earlier—in the third round.
When Gabriel was drafted, he likely expected to be the only rookie quarterback in the room. Instead, he finds himself competing with Sanders. Gabriel, who played a lot of college football, already carries himself like a veteran in his approach to the quarterback room.
“I love it because of who it is,” Gabriel said about joining the Browns alongside Sanders. “I think just for us both, you can learn from one another. But also it’s not just us two in the room. At least for right now it is, but going into the year—Kenny (Pickett), Joe (Flacco), and even Deshaun (Watson)—just a bunch of guys who’ve played a lot of ball. We can all learn from each other.”

Sanders was selected two rounds after Gabriel, falling to the fifth round. Cleveland couldn’t pass up the value and decided to take two quarterbacks with their seven draft picks.
Both quarterbacks will have a chance to compete for a starting role or a spot on the depth chart. In the end, the Browns could keep both—or just one. That decision will unfold during training camp. It’s still early, but Gabriel appears to be approaching the opportunity with the right mindset.
