The Bucs have signed cornerback Brandon Johnson to their practice squad on Tuesday, the team announced. The team had an opening after veteran Sean Murphy-Bunting was signed off the practice squad and went to the Steelers active roster.
Johnson joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025. He spent the majority of his rookie season on Philadelphia’s practice squad before appearing in three game. He had one official start and recording three tackles and one pass defensed in three total games.
He played collegiately at Duke from 2021 to 2023, followed by Oregon in 2024. Johnson played in 50 career college football games, totaling 173 tackles (20.5 for loss), 16 passes defensed, 8.0 sacks and three interceptions.
During his one season at Oregon, Johnson appeared in all 14 games and recorded 45 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss with six passes defensed and one interception, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition.
Adding a corner immediately replaces the departure of Murphy-Bunting and gives them a little extra insurance at the corner position. Benjamin Morrison missed last game with a quad injury, so it’s not a guaranteed that he’ll be available on a short week with the Bucs traveling to Dallas to take on the Cowboys this Thursday.
If Morrison is it out, that would likely mean the Bucs would dress rookie corner Ayden Garnes while Zyon McCollum and Jacob Parrish start with Kevin Knowles available, too. In reality, it would be difficult to get Johnson up to speed and have a chance to play on such short notice.
What will be interesting to see is how Tampa Bay handles their room at the safety position. Team captain Antoine Winfield Jr. is going to miss anywhere from two to four weeks with slightly fractured ribs. That means Ifeatu Melifonwu gets the start next to Tykee Smith. But who becomes the backup then? Veteran Miles Killebrew is listed as a safety, but he’s on this roster as a special teamer. The only other players on the practice squad that could be elevated are second year player J.J. Roberts, who is coming off of a torn ACL and and has yet to play in an NFL game, and Silas Walters, who is a rookie that hasn’t played in an NFL game.
The Bucs will have some decisions to make ahead of their big matchup on Thursday night. The team is currently 0-4 and trying to find some answers in order to salvage their season.
