The BYU Cougars softball team had a disappointing Selection Sunday, missing out on the tournament as one of the First Four Teams to miss the field.
31 teams earned automatic bids and there were 33 at-large bids in this year’s NCAA tournament field. Nevada was the second team left out of the field of 64, behind BYU. North Texas and Purdue were the next two teams left out.
There’s a belief that BYU always has a tough time getting in, as the NCAA may not be interested in having to cater to BYU by shifting a regional to Thursday to Saturday, rather than Friday to Sunday. But regardless, the Cougars have now missed the NCAA Tournament for four-straight seasons.
Last week, No. 6-seed BYU softball dropped a 4-2 contest to No. 3-seed Iowa State in the quarterfinal of the Big 12 Championship. The Cougars (32-17, 13-11 Big 12) took an early lead on an Aleia Agbayani home run, but gave up runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames, including two Cyclone home runs of their own, that put them in a deficit they were unable to come back from.
College softball’s 2025 NCAA Tournament was set on Sunday, and the Big 12 Conference landed five bids. This ranks fourth of all conferences, trailing the SEC, ACC and Big Ten.
Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, UCF, Arizona and Arizona State all made the field from the Big 12.
The Regional round goes from May 16-18, followed by the Super Regional round from May 22-25, and finally, the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City from May 29 to June 5th or 6th.
