BYU Unveils Uniform Combination for Texas Tech
USA TODAY Sports

On Monday, the BYU football program unveiled the uniform combination it will wear against Texas Tech. The Cougars will wear the classic royal home uniforms.

These uniforms were last worn against East Carolina last season.

BYU Uniform Combinations in 2023

This will be the seventh unique uniform combination in as many games for BYU. In week one against Sam Houston State, BYU wore the royal home uniforms with royal helmets.

Against Southern Utah, BYU wore all navy including a new navy helmet. That was the first time BYU had worn navy helmets since 2021.

Against Arkansas, BYU wore the royal away jerseys with royal helmets in a 38-31 upset.

Against Kansas, BYU wore all white with navy accents.

Against Cincinnati, BYU wore the all royal uniforms.

Against TCU, BYU wore the classic royal away uniforms in a blowout loss.

Over the last three years, BYU has introduced more uniform variety than any other time in program history. The Cougars have added blue helmets, new blackout uniforms, painted helmets, and they even replaced the classic stretch “Y” with the Sailor Coug logo on the helmets for the New Mexico Bowl. In 2021, BYU wore 12 unique uniform combinations in 13 games. In 2022, BYU wore 13 different uniforms in 13 games. BYU has added so much variety, in fact, that they have toed the fine line between tradition and variety. BYU’s classic set of royal home and away uniforms are some of the best and most recognizable in college football. The downside to variety is it limits the opportunities to wear the most traditional and recognizable uniforms. Uniforms are an ingredient in brand identity, and brand identity and power is currently the most valuable asset in college athletics. It’s unknown how BYU will balance uniform tradition and variety moving forward. So far this season, BYU has favored variety over tradition.
