Caitlin Clark injury update: Indiana Fever star participates in shootaround before game vs. Lynx

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark participated in shootaround before Sunday’s contest against the Minnesota Lynx, according to Chloe Peterson of The Indianapolis Star. Although Clark has still not officially returned to practice, this is her first time working with the team since her injury.

Clark has not played since July 15 as she recovers from a right groin injury. Even with her participation in Sunday’s shootaround, she seems likely to miss her 15th straight game.

Clark is far from the only injury blow that the Fever have been dealt this season. Most recently, guard Sophie Cunningham was ruled out for the season after suffering a torn MCL in her right knee. Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson both went down with season-ending injuries during a July 30 loss to the Phoenix Mercury.

In spite of this, the Fever (19-17) have managed to stay in the postseason race. They are currently in sixth place in the standings and 2.5 games behind the fifth-place New York Liberty.

Perhaps more concerning, Indiana is only 1.5 games ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Sparks. That makes these final eight games a critical stretch for the Fever as they aim to make the postseason for the second straight year.

It’s still unclear at this point when Clark will return, but Fever coach Stephanie White said “the hope” is that she will be back before the end of the regular season. The recent shootaround sighting certainly is a good sign for that to come true. Tip-off between the Fever and Lynx is set for 7 p.m. ET on Sunday at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

Caitlin Clark suffered second injury amid groin rehab, per report

In addition to the groin injury, Clark is nursing a bone bruise in her left ankle, according to multiple reports. Scott Agnes of FieldHouseFiles.com first reported on the injury, which occurred on Aug. 7 in Phoenix. Clark was toward the end of a workout when she injured her left ankle.

According to Chloe Peterson of The Indianapolis Star, Caitlin Clark’s ankle injury is “very mild.” The injury apparently does not impact her return timeline, as Clark would still be out rehabbing the groin currently.

Still, it’s another setback in a year that has had plenty of them. Clark has played in just 13 games.

“Until she can get into practice, and until you guys see her in practice, it’s really status quo, same as same as we have been,” coach Stephanie White said, per Peterson.
