Cam Rising to Coach Four-Star QB Recruit After Medically Retiring
Rob Gray-USA TODAY Sports

After a seven-year college football career, Utah quarterback Cam Rising announced on Wednesday that he is medically retiring from football.

The decision comes even though, had he applied and been granted approval for another medical redshirt, Rising technically could have returned to college football for an eighth season.

While the announcement seemed to be quite sudden and out of the blue, as no one had really heard from Rising after it was revealed Utah was moving on from him in January, Rising's next career move has already been revealed. As confirmed by On3's Hayes Fawcett, Rising will be taking the role of offensive coordinator for Newbury Park High School in California.

Not only is this the same program where Rising played his high school ball during his time as a four-star recruit in 2018, but it is now also home to one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

Rising will be calling plays for 2026 four-star and Michigan commit, Brady Smigiel, who was at one point committed to Florida State before backing off of his pledge. According to On3's industry rankings, Smigiel ranks as the No. 92 player in the country, No. 9 quarterback and as the No. 14 player in the state of California.

During his junior season, Smigiel threw for 3,521 yards and 49 touchdowns, while leading to a division title.

As for Rising, he departs college football having thrown for 6,127 yards with 53 passing touchdowns, along with 12 rushing touchdowns. Rising also led Utah to its first-ever Pac-12 championship in 2021, which should give him plenty of advice to offer Smigiel as he embarks on his new journey.
