Cam Skattebo enters his rookie season with the New York Giants carrying high expectations, as highlighted by a recent Pro Football Focus article.
Their piece detailed non-first-round rookie running backs who could lead their backfields in 2025, and Skattebo was one of just three named.
He joins a backfield featuring veteran Devin Singletary and 2024 fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy, both of whom had productive campaigns in 2024. However, rumors have circulated about the potential for Singletary to be cut before the season starts, and Tracy struggled with ball security, ranking third in fumbles among running backs last season.
These factors could clear the path for Skattebo to become the Giants’ lead back sooner than expected.
Skattebo fits what the Giants desperately need: a bruising, reliable runner that the offense can lean on. He took the third-most rushing attempts in the country in 2024, proving he can handle a workhorse role.
At 5-foot-9 and 220 pounds, Skattebo is a compact, physical runner whose calling card is his ability to thrive on contact. His 1,711-yard, 21-touchdown season earned him a fifth-place finish in the 2024 Heisman voting. Skattebo’s massive role in Arizona State’s offense helped lead the program to its first College Football Playoff berth in school history.
He further showcased his ability to carry an offense in Arizona State’s playoff matchup against one of the toughest defenses in the country, Texas. The Longhorns allowed just 109.6 rushing yards per game in 2024, the third-best mark in the nation. Despite this, Skattebo exploded for 143 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, eight catches for 99 yards, and even threw a touchdown pass.
That game encapsulated what Skattebo could bring to the Giants: a culture-builder who leads by example and gives maximum effort every time he touches the ball.
Chances are, that opportunity is coming sooner than anyone thinks.
