Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons still isn't on the practice field as he awaits his new monster contract extension, and given that Week 1 is fast approaching, we have now gone past the point where Micah could play a full game.
With the Cowboys facing the Philadelphia Eagles to begin the NFL season, Parsons might be on the field, but he won't be the demon we know he can be. Why?
Because he hasn't practiced all training camp, and with only a handful of practices left, if Parsons were to sign today, he wouldn't have enough time to get back into "football" shape.
But head coach Brian Schottenheimer thinks that despite Micah not practicing, the fact that he's been in meetings and walkthroughs gives him an advantage.
“It's different for everybody, the fact he's been here gives him a little bit of a leg up,” Schottenheimer said. “He knows the defense and that could be a completely different story if he wasn't here. We want him out there as soon as possible and when he's feeling up to it and all those things is a big factor into it.
"But the best way to get good at football and to is to play football. So I would say as soon as possible would be the desired effect."
However, given that this contract saga has taken so long to get done, Micah has missed out on a number of practices, so the Cowboys, regardless of whether Parsons gets signed this offseason, are at a disadvantage because No. 11 can't be on the field like he usually is.
Still, Schottenheimer thinks he can still be disruptive on limited preparation.
"At the end of the day, as soon as he can get out there, that's great," Schottenheimer added. "But there'll be a ramp-up plan for him. When he lines up out there to play, do I think he would play 75 plays and every play? Probably not. I don't think that's real. But I do think that he can be very disruptive like we all know.”
The longer this contract saga goes, the worse it is for the Cowboys on the field, because against the Eagles, Parsons won't be full-go, and there's a strong chance he won't be for Week 2 against the New York Giants either.
And for a Dallas team that needs everything to go right if it is to push for a postseason spot, that is far from ideal.
