This week in baseball involves a proud Canadian performance. Under the college lights of the NCAA, a very familiar pitcher from north of the border has been opening eyes. Tate Carey is this week’s Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, Big Ten Freshman of the Week, and also earned the Dick Howser trophy for National Pitcher of the Week (co-winner), presented by the National College Baseball Writers Association. Carey is a freshman at the University of Michigan.
The Wolverine was recently responsible for the first Wolverine’s no-hitter since 1994. This stemmed from a start against Akron Falls on April 8th, where Michigan blew them out for a 13-0 win.
Carey started the game off by getting two groundouts and a flyout to end the first inning, and the right-hander was in cruise control the entire way. He got his first strikeout in the second inning and added three more in the top of the sixth, setting down the side all on swinging strikeouts. His only blemish was a leadoff walk to start the top of the seventh inning, with only five pitches needed to get the runner on, but a fielder’s choice and a groundball double play got Carey out of the inning and the elusive no-hitter honour. He needed just 77 pitches to get through the outing, facing the minimum 21 batters and improving his record to 5-0 on the season.

Carey would follow that appearance with another strong outing on April 13th against Mount St. Marys, where he went five innings and allowed just three hits with zero earned runs while striking out seven. He hit two batters but walked zero on the day, adding six groundballs in the mix to keep runners from plating throughout his 78-pitch appearance.
For the week, the Canadian right-hander recorded 12 innings across two starts, 0 earned runs allowed, three hits, 11 strikeouts, .081 average against, and two wins, inclusive of a no-hitter. The Windsor, Ontario product currently boasts a 6-0 record through 12 appearances (two starts) and has amassed a 4.33 ERA with 19 strikeouts across 27 innings, holding opponents to a .210 batting average.
The right-hander played his local ball for the Great Lake Canadians in the Canadian Premier Baseball League. His showings there, as well as at the Canadian Futures Showcase, highlighted his ability to pitch in high-pressure situations. Carey is also no stranger to the Junior National Program, where he continued to hone his craft before committing to the University of Michigan, and he was also named to Team Canada’s roster for the WSBC Pan American Championships last August and made one start against a strong Dominican Republic squad.

Michigan holds a 23-14 record in the Big Ten Conference, and plays its next game against Iowa
The Wolverine pitcher is the second arm with Canadian ties to throw a no-hitter in the NCAA this season. This is second to Blake Gillespie of the University of Charlotte, who achieved the feat back in early March.
