After suffering consecutive losses to the Tampa Bay Rays, the St. Louis Cardinals opened their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a thrilling 7-6 walk-off victory on Monday night at Busch Stadium III. Alec Burleson delivered the decisive moment, launching a two-out, ninth-inning home run to secure the win.

With the win, St. Louis improved to 65-67, staying below .500 as the playoff race intensifies.

Burleson's game-high four hits and two runs was coupled with runs from Norlan Gorman, Masyn Winn, and catcher Willson Contreras as the Cardinals held on to earn a crucial win. Despite the dramatic finish, the night marked a new low for the organization.

The Cardinals, fourth in the National League Central standings, began a four-game series against the struggling Pirates, hoping to reignite their playoff hopes. While St. Louis ultimately prevailed behind Burleson’s walk-off blast in the ninth, the bigger off-field story was in the stands.

Monday’s paid attendance was announced at 17,675 — the lowest in Busch Stadium III history and the first time the Cardinals have drawn fewer than 20,000 fans since the ballpark opened in 2006. The number reflects growing dissatisfaction among the fanbase as the team has endured inconsistent play and failed to meet expectations over the last two seasons.

On the field, the Cardinals’ win was nearly overshadowed by an alarming scene in the seventh inning involving Contreras. After striking out on an 0-2 pitch, Contreras exchanged words with home plate umpire Derek Thomas and was quickly ejected.

Things escalated quickly as Contreras charged toward Thomas before being restrained by manager Oli Marmol and bench coach Daniel Descalso. In his frustration, he flung his bat, which inadvertently struck assistant coach Brant Brown. Still furious, Contreras grabbed a bucket of Hi-Chew candies and launched it onto the field, creating a surreal scene as Alec Burleson, Stubby Clapp, and others scrambled to clear the mess.

Cardinals’ Playoff Picture Tightens With September Approaching

As it stands, the Cardinals have the 8th best record in the NL and are holding on to the final Wild Card spot, leaving little room for error with just over a month left in the season.

St. Louis has missed the playoffs in back-to-back years and have failed to advance past the NL Wild Card Round since the new postseason format. The Cardinals will hope to win the series against Pittsburgh when both teams return to action on Tuesday night.
